Discussion

LESSON I:
I. HISTORY

On February 9, 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts

(USA), William G. Morgan, a YMCA Physical Education
director, created a new game called “Mintonettee” as
a pastime to be played preferably indoors and less
strenuous than basketball. He divided a rectangular
court into two equal parts by piles of book lines at the
center of the court that serve as the net. Morgan
called the game “mintonette” because of the net
which he used to divide the court into two. The
objective of the game is to keep the ball on air by
using the hands to hit the ball bask and forth from
one side of the court
to another until one group misses the chance of
hitting the ball back to the opponent’s side. https://www.fivb.com/en/volleyball/

The interior of a basketball was the first ball used in mintonette. But it seemed that the
interior of a basketball was too light for the game, while the basketball was to heavy. A.G.
Spalding created a ball suited for the new game.

In 1932, Alfred Hastead, a professor of YMCA suggested to change the name of the game
from Mintonette into “Volleyball” because of one skills used in playing which is volley.

The popularity of volleyball started to spread in the early 1900. In fact, here in the
Philippines, It was introduced by Elwood Brown in the year 1910. The game was received
warmly. The Filipino’s introduced the spike hit, one of the skills in volleyball. The ball is hit
close to the net with tremendous force. In local lingo, spike is known as kill or “atake”

In 1964, at Tokyo Olympics, volleyball became an Olympic Sports for men and women.

II. NATURE OF THE GAME

 Volleyball is played by two teams, each composed of six players, who uses their
hands to volley a ball back and forth over the net which is higher to their heads.

 The objective of this game is to volley the ball over the net with certain limitations,
before it touches the ground in such a way that the opponent cannot return it.

 It is started by a server who serves the ball over the net behind the baseline.

 Require not more than three passes among the players in each side before returning
the ball.

 Failure to return the ball to the opponents within specific limits result in loss of
serve or the scoring of a point by a serving team.

II. Terminologies

* ACE- a serve that results directly in a point * JUMP SERVE- a top spin serve
*ANTENNA - red-and-white striped pole attached delivered by a player in midair
to the net that extends 32 inches above the net * KILL - an attack that results directly
and indicates out-of-bounds along the sideline in a point or side out

to replace another player already
on the court. Each team is allowed
15 substitutions per game. Each
Each player has unlimited entries
for substitution.

III. FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

 Center line: line beneath the net,
divides the court in 2 equal parts
 Attack line: Divides the front zone and back zone of each court.
 Attack area: marked out by the center line and the attack line which is drawn 3
meters away and parallel to the center line.
 Service area: an extension of the right side lines.

2. NET

I. Rules of the Game

 The Serve

 Server must serve from behind the restraining line (end line) until after
contact.
 Ball may be served underhand or overhand.
 Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before serve.
 Served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for a point.
 First game serve is determined by a volley; each subsequent game shall be
served by the previous game loser.
 Serve must be returned by a bump only, no setting or attacking a serve.

 The Scoring

 Rally point scoring will be used. (There will be a point scored on every score
of the ball).
 A team will gain a score point once the opponent commits a defensive error.
A defensive team will gain a score point once the offensive team commits an
attack error or out of bounce.
 Game will be played to 25 points.
 A set (except the deciding 5th set) is won by the team which first scores 25
points with a minimum lead of two points. In the case of a 24-24 tie, play is
continued until a two-point lead is achieved (26-24; 27-25; …).
 The match is won by the team that wins three sets. In the case of a 2-2 tie, the
deciding 5th set is played to 15 points with a minimum lead of 2 points.

 The Rotation

8
SOUTHERN LEYTE STATE UNIVERSITY - MAIN CAMPUS
INSTITUTE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

 The rotational order is determined by the team's starting line-up and

controlled with the service order and players' positions throughout the set .
 When the receiving team has gained the right to serve, its players rotate one
position clock-wise: the player in position 2 rotates to position 1 to serve, the
player in position 1 rotates to position 6, etc.

 The Game Play

 6 players on a team, 3 on the front row and 3 on the back row

 Maximum of 3 hits per side.
 Player may not hit the ball twice in succession (a block is NOT considered a
hit).
 Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on a serve.
 A ball touching a boundary line is good.
 A ball is out if it hits:
o an antenna,
o the floor completely outside the court,
o any of the net or cables outside the antennae,
o the referee stands or pole,
o the ceiling above a non-playable area
 It is legal to contact the ball with any part of a players’ body
 It is illegal to catch, hold, or throw the ball
 If two or more players contact the ball at the same time, it is considered one
play and either player involved may make the next contact (provided the
next contact isn’t the teams 4th hit)
 A player must not block or attack a serve.
 Switching positions will be allowed strictly for front line players. (After the
serve only).
 At higher competition, the officiating crew may be made up of two refs, line
judges, scorer, and an assistant scorer.

 The Basic Violation

 Stepping on or over the line on a serve

 Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully
 Hitting the ball illegally (carrying, palming, throwing, etc.)
 Touching the net with any part of your body while the ball is in play
 Reaching over the net, except in these conditions:
o When executing a follow through
o When blocking a ball which is in the opponent’s court
but is being returned (Block cannot contact the ball
until AFTER the opponent attempting to return the
ball makes contact)

 Reaching under the net

 Failure to serve in the correct order
 Blocks or spikes from a position in which is clearly not behind the 10-foot
line while in the back row position.

Nature and Rules of the Game (Volleyball)

Team composition in volleyball typically consists of six players on the court at

a time, with each player having specific positions and roles. Here is a
breakdown of the standard team composition in volleyball:

Outside Hitter (Left Side Hitter): This player usually lines up on the left side of
Team
the net. They are responsible for both offensive and defensive duties. They
Composition often receive sets from the setter and attempt to spike the ball past the
opposing block and defense.

Opposite Hitter (Right Side Hitter): The opposite hitter lines up on the right
side of the net, opposite the outside hitter. They also have offensive and
defensive responsibilities. They are usually the secondary attacker and often
help block against the opponent's outside hitter.

LESSON 3:
I. Basic Skills

1. Serve - The Act of putting the ball in play. It has three types:

 Underhand Serve – a serve in which the player strikes the ball below the waist
instead of tossing it up and striking it with an overhand throwing
motion. Underhand serve are considered very easy to receive
and are rarely employed in high-level competitions.
 Overhand Serve – Has the same stance with underhand serve, but the skills is
executed by the player by tossing the ball approximately above
the head level.
 Jump Serve - as the same stance with the overhand serve, however, this is done
when the player lifts his/her foot from the ground before hitting the
ball.

2. Passing - An attempt by a team to properly handle the opponents’ serve, or any other
form of attack. It has three types:

 UNDERHAND PASS - Used when the ball is received below

the shoulders.
 OVERHAND PASS - Used when the ball is received above
the shoulders.
 SPECIAL PASS:

 Dig Pass - A kind of method of fielding the

ball that is almost out of reach.
- Executed mostly by the libero.
 Set-up - A pass for the purpose of placing
the ball in position for the spiker
to hit or smash. Usually done by
the setter.

3. Spiking - Usually the third contact a team makes with the ball. The objective of spiking is
to handle the ball so that it will land in the opponent’s court and cannot be defended. It has
two types:

11
SOUTHERN LEYTE STATE UNIVERSITY - MAIN CAMPUS
INSTITUTE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

 Hard spike - This is a strong spike that is expected to push

back the blocking hands or cause the ball to go
out of control in the blocking hands after hitting it.

 Soft Spike - The ball just rolls off the hands of the blocker so that
a fault is committed.

LESSON 4:

I. Officiating Officials

1. First referee
- The referee conducts the game. He acts as the highest official in the court
throughout the game. He gives the signal to start or to stop the play using the whistle. He
allows time-outs, which are recorded by the scorer. He also signs the scorer. He announces
the score, the winner, and the loser. He also signs the score sheet.
2. Second Referee (Umpire)
- He assists the referee in the conduct of the game. He flips the coin in toss-up
to determine which team will serve and which team will select its court. He
observes the correct serving order. If there are players who exchange
positions, he stops the game and reports the incident to the referee. He
assists the referee by calling a violation not noticed by the latter.
3. Scorekeeper
-The scorekeeper’s main job is to make sure the score is correct all the times.
-The scorekeeper uses a score sheet to keep track of the game.

4. Assistant Scorer
-The assistant scorer sits at the scorer’s table next to the scorekeeper.
-The assistant scorer’s main function is to record libero replacements on to a
libero tracking sheet.

5. Line Judges
- The linesman has a flaglet to signal wither the ball is in or out of bounds.
When the ball is in, he points his flaglet toward the court; when the ball is out, he
raises his flaglet overhead. He makes sure that the referee and umpire see his signal.
