02

1) In a truss bridge, a diagonal member consisting of a 16 mm thick flat of E250 in grade

steel carrying tensile force 450 kN is connected to a gusset plate by a double cover butt.
The thickness of each cover plate is 10 mm. Determine the number of 20 mm diameter
black bolts of grade 4.6 and the width of flat. Detail the bolts in diamond pattern and
compute the efficiency of the joint.
2) Design the connection at joint C of a truss as shown in the figure below. The members
are connected with M16 bolts of grade 4.6 to the gusset of grade E250. (a) Sketch the
details of joint when the bottom member is discontinuous. (b) What would be the
number of bolts required for connecting the bottom members with the gusset if the
member is continuous?

3) The end of an ISMB400 beam is connected to ISMB600 beam through an end plate.
Design and detail an end plate connection between two beams for a reaction of 450 kN
using 24 mm diameter black bolts of grade 5.6. The grade of the rolled steel sections is
E250.
4) A double cover butt joint connecting two 12 mm thick plates in grade E250 steel has 8
mm thick cover plates of unequal length as shown in the figure below. The joint is
fabricated using 20 mm nominal diameter black bolts of grade 4.6. Determine the
strength of the joint per pitch and its efficiency.

5) A 150 × 115 × 8 mm angle in E250 grade steel carrying centroidal factored tensile load of
250 kN is to be field welded to a 12 mm thick gusset plate, with the 150 mm leg against
the plate. Determine the lengths of 6 mm side fillet welds required at the heel and toe of

the angle for noneccentric connection. The distance of centroidal axis of angle from the
heel is 44.6 mm.
6) A tie in a truss consists of a pair of angles ISA 100 × 65 × 10 mm in Fe 410 grade steel,
welded on either side of a 12 mm thick gusset plate through the longer legs. Design the
welded joint using site fillet weld.
7) Determine the service load which can be applied to the fillet welds for the cases shown
in the figures below. Consider the weld size to be 3 mm.

8) Two 12 mm thick plates are joined in the workshop by (i) a single V-butt weld, (ii) a
double V-butt weld. The effective length of the weld is 220 mm. Determine the design
strength of the welded joints.
9) An ISLB 300 @ 369.8 N/m transmits an end reaction of 385 kN, under factored loads, to
the web of ISMB 450 @ 710.2 N/m. Design a bolted framed connection. Steel is of grade
E250 and bolts are of grade 4.6.

10) Design a seat connection for a factored beam end reaction of 110 kN. The beam section
is ISMB 250 @ 365.9 N/m connected to the flange of column section ISHB 200 @ 365.9
N/m using bolted connections. Steel is of grade E250 and bolts of grade 4.6.
