TEDTALK

INTRODUCTION:

Saint Augustine once said, “the world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” While I do not discount the value of a formal
education, travel provides learning opportunities that cannot be realized within the confines of a classroom.

SUBTOPIC #1: PERSPECTIVE

When you travel extensively, you inevitably develop a new appreciation for everything you have.
Traveling to other countries, particularly those in the developing world, can put your own life into perspective; things that you may take
for granted, like access to education and healthcare, clean drinking water, and proper waste management are not available to
everyone, simply because of where they were born.
Travel allows us to break down barriers between people, provides a better understanding of others and their lived experiences.

SUBTOPIC #2: CULTURAL AWARENESS

Traveling enables you to explore new cultures, customs, and ways of living and as such, is an authentic way to immerse yourself in the
diversity that exists in our world.
Through travel, we learn that although our outward appearances are often vastly different (we dress in different ways, have different
traditions and languages, and have different religious affiliations), all cultures love their children, are proud of their heritage, and want to
improve conditions for their families.
Through travel, our world views are challenged and you will see different, perhaps better, ways of accomplishing the same things.

SUBTOPIC #3: SOCIAL CONNECTION

We are so connected that we are disconnected

One of the benefits of travel is, undoubtedly, the friendships and connections you make with people from across the globe.
Coupled with digital technology, it is also incredibly easy to maintain these connections once you return home.
Exploring new countries allows you to establish new relationships and develop networks that would have never been acquired without travel.

SUBTOPIC #4: EXPAND & IMPROVE YOUR PALATE

Traveling provides the perfect opportunity to try out new and authentic delicacies from different parts of the world.
Introduces you to unique flavours which you have neither tasted and/or heard of
It might be conch in the Turks and Caicos, haggis in Scotland, or mango and sticky rice in Thailand, but the opportunity to sample
traditional delicacies from other corners of the globe will introduce you to unique flavours and customs that you can infuse into your
own cooking.
One of the best things about discovering new destinations and cultures is, by far, the food!

CONCLUSION

Traveling indeed is a form of education that just cannot be gleaned by looking at Google slides or by reading any textbook. Travel teaches us
geography, food and nutrition, culture, religion, understanding, and empathy. While book knowledge provides us with the theoretical concepts
necessary for employment, traveling demands that we gather wisdom by learning about real life experiences. So embrace the unfamiliar and
the unexpected, and become a student of the world through travel.
