I attended the Lambda Center’s Saturday Night Live Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group on
Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 8:00 PM. The Lambda Center is an LGBTQ+ recovery community
center offering several types of recovery groups. It’s located at 1201 W Clay St. Houston, TX. 77019.
The Lambda Center’s Saturday Night Live Group is a Speaker Group, and the philosophy of
this type of Speaker group is for a chosen member to share their story of their alcoholism, their
struggles, and how they got to where they are today so that others are inspired by their story and can
identify with the speaker’s story and apply their lessons to themselves. This group, although open to
The basic rules that the facilitator/spokesperson mentioned at the beginning of the meeting

No Cross Talking which refers to not interrupting others while one person is talking or sharing, but
rather share their own experiences after the one who is speaking finishes and how what they heard
Time Limits: The facilitator mentioned being mindful of with use of the time. I noticed that some
people were taking a long time to talk, and the facilitator reminded the members that other members

Not Discussing “Cross-Addiction”. It was reminded to the attendees that discussing other types of
addictions (i.e., Sex or Cocaine) should be discussed at other 12-step groups related to that addiction.
I noticed that members started by saying “My name is ______and I’m an alcoholic”. After the
introductions, the facilitator read what they call the 12-step and 12 traditions and also included the
rules, and introduced the speaker that night by first name. While the speaker spoke, I noticed some
members crying. The theme of the speaker’s share was related to how alcoholism affected his
relationship and family. After the speaker finished talking, a member said “Thank you for sharing”
and went on to talk about his own life and discussed something in particular and thanked the speaker
for sharing this similar thing about his own life. Several people did the same thing.
It appears that members who spoke about their own lives brought up how alcoholism affected
their relationships and family as well, but also other areas of life. These areas I noticed were related
to money, reputation, health, jobs, legal issues, and school. Some people lost marriages, some people
stated they became HIV positive because of having unprotected sex while inhibited and not using
good judgment, some people shared about having to file bankruptcy, and another person mentioned
was fired from several jobs. One member shared he had several DUIs. The meeting went over
because one member asked “I have an urging desire” and went on to discuss he was having a hard
time with what the other person had shared. After that, the group closed with what AA calls the
Serenity Prayer and all created a circle and held hands together.
