IPC THEMES ‘Being Human and Making Materials Work for Us ’

SYNOPSIS YEAR 6

Our focus this term on ‘Being Human and Making Materials Work for us is based around
specific targets derived from the learning goals for one or more of the subjects. During this unit
we will be focusing on Science, History, Health and Wellbeing, Design, Technology and
Innovation and International. This is part of the Cambridge Assessment International Education.

TOPIC LEARNING GOALS

The learner should be able to acquire knowledge, skills and understanding


about:
 The function of bones and the muscles in the body
 The human heart and how it works
Being Human  What the respiratory system does
 The connection between the respiratory and circulatory systems
Science  The characteristics that offspring can inherit from their parents
 The nature versus nurture debate
 The nutrients our body systems need and how they get them.

Health and  The various stages in the human life cycle


Wellbeing  The physical and social, emotional changes during puberty
 Strategies for managing stress during puberty
 The ageing process in humans
 Threats to our health
 The different nutrients in a healthy diet.

International  Obesity and acute hunger


 Sports that particular countries dominate.

Making Materials  Which rocks are brittle and which are resilient
Work for us  Testing rocks for permeability
 Test what makes a good insulator
Science  Properties of different soils
 Carrying out fair tests on fabrics
 Some newly discovered/created materials.

History  The importance of bronze, iron and clay.

International  How we produce and use plastic


 Why plastic waste is a global problem and what we can do about it
 New alternatives to plastic.
