GRAMMAR
was / were
• we use was / were to describe situations in the past
The Pokémon game was Japanese.

• we use was with I / he / she / it, and were with you / we / they

was / were: questions and short answers


• the word order is different in questions
You were tired yesterday.
Were you tired yesterday?
Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.
There was/ there
- we use there was to refer to one thing or person in the past
There was an apple on the table.
-we use there were to refer to more than one thing or person
There were games consoles in the 1980s
There was/were: questions and short answers
- Was there a computer at your grandad's school?
-Were there tablet computers in the 1980's

Past simple affirmative: regular verbs


• we use the past simple to describe finished actions or situations in the past
I listened to the radio.
We watched a documentary last night.
• the form is the same for all subject pronouns
• we add -(e)d to make the past simple of regular verbs

Past simple affirmative spelling rules


• for most verbs, add -ed:

• for verbs that end in -e, add -d:
love – loved
• for verbs that end in consonant + -y, change to consonant + -i and add -ed:
tidy – tidied

• for verbs that end in vowel + consonant, add -ed:

• for verbs that end in stressed vowel + consonant (except -w or -y), double the
final consonant and add -ed:
stop – stopped
