Grammar: Verb+ing (other name: Gerund)

What is a verb+ing (gerund)?

1) Gerunds are formed by adding “-ing” to the verb.

• For example: “sleeping,” “drawing,” “swimming.”

VERB + ing = GERUND

Sleep + ing = Sleeping
Draw + ing = Drawing
Swim + ing = Swimming

2) But gerunds are not the “-ing” verb forms that you see in the present or past continuous
tense. They look the same, but gerunds are actually verb forms used as nouns.
[ GERUNDS = NOUNS ]

Gerund’s First Basic Rule:

• Gerunds can be used as a SUBJECT of a sentence.

• For example:

SUBJECT (GERUND) + PREDICATE

Eating + is important to me.
Walking + is good for our health.

Gerund’s Second Basic Rule:

• Gerunds can be used as an OBJECT of a sentence.

• For example:

SUBJECT VERB OBJECT (GERUND)

Suho likes running.
Lydia prefers jogging.
I love walking.
