Install Application software
TLE_IACSS9- 12ICCS-IIIa-e-31

Learning Objective:
After reading this module you will learn how to install application software.

LEARNING CONTENT
Software is capable of performing many tasks, as opposed to hardware which can only perform
mechanical tasks that they are designed for. Software provides the means for accomplishing many
different tasks with the same basic hardware.

System software: Helps run the computer hardware and computer system itself. System software includes
operating systems, device drivers, diagnostic tools and more. System software is almost always pre-
installed on your computer.
Application software: Allows users to accomplish one or more tasks. It includes word processing, web
browsing and almost any other task for which you might install software. (Some application software is pre-
installed on most computer systems.)
HOW TO GET SOFTWARE ONTO YOUR COMPUTER?
➢ Software can be purchased or acquired as shareware (usually intended for sale after a trial period),
liteware (shareware with some capabilities disabled), freeware (free software but with copyright
restrictions), public domain software (free with no restrictions), and open source (software where
the source code is furnished and users agree not to limit the distribution of improvements).
➢ Software is often packaged on CD-ROMs and diskettes. Today, much purchased software,
shareware, and freeware is downloaded over the internet. A new trend which is software is
made available for use at another site known as an application service provider.
HORIZONTAL vs VERTICAL APPLICATIONS
Horizontal Applications
➢ They are general purpose programs that address the needs of many people, such as writing
document (word processing), working with numbers (spread sheets) and keeping track of
information (database).
❖ Three types:
1. Personal productivity programs: Most popular programs, examples are, word processing
programs, spreadsheet programs and database programs etc.
2. Multimedia and graphics programs: popular presentation programs, an example is, MS
power point.
3. Internet programs: programs for using the internet, for instance, e-mail programs, web
browsers etc.
Vertical Applications
➢ They are generally designed for a particular line of business or for a division in a company, for
instance, garments production tracking program, restaurant management program etc.
➢ Vertical software designed for a customer of specific jobs is known as custom software. Generally
vertical software is costly due to small size of market.
Commercial software is copyrighted, and one must pay before using it.
Shareware software is also copyrighted software that one can use on a “try before buy” basis. If a user
likes to buy it after using it for a specified trial period, the user must pay the registration.
Freeware refers to copyrighted software given away free, with the understanding that one cannot sell it for
profit. Liteware is a shareware with some capabilities disabled.
What is Software Licensing?
➢ Software Licensing is the legal right to run or the privilege given to you by a company to access
their application (or program).

4|Page ARBOLEDA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

➢ A license agreement governs the use of licensed software. License agreements typically allow the
software to run on a limited number of computers and allow copies to be made, though solely for
backup purposes.

HOW TO INSTALL A SOFTWARE FROM CD/DVD:

1. Insert the program disc into your computer’s disc drive or tray, label side up (or, if your computer has a
vertical disc slots instead, insert the disc with the label side facing left).
2. Click the option to run Install or Setup.
3. If the installer offers a language selection, choose yours; likewise, agree to the end-user license agreement,
if requested.
4. If the installer offers Express or Custom installation options, choose the Express option to let the installer
set up the program without further input from you.
5. As the installer program continues to run and display dialog boxes, click the Next or continue button.
6. Click the Finish or Close button in the last step of the installer program to complete the process.

HOW TO INSTALL NO AUTORUN FEATURE

1. Open My Computer.
2. Within the My Computer window, open the drive that contains the installation files.
3. Within the drive that contains your files, locate the executable setup. (i.e. “setup.exe”) or install file. Double
clicking on this file starts the installation process. If you see multiple setups or install files, try to locate an
executable file, or double-click each of the setup or install files until you find the file that starts the
installation. Many times, the icons associated with the installation files have the same name.
4. Follow the installers’ procedures

HOW TO INSTALL FROM A DOWNLOAD

1. Download the program from the website providing the program.
2. Open the download folder.
3. If the file you downloaded is an executable file, double-click the file icon to start the setup process. If the
downloaded file is compressed (e.g.zip) you must extract the file’s contents before setup can begin.
4. Once the files are extracted, double-click the setup to install.
