mail carrier, farmer, doctor, teacher, etc.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? The goal is to understand the different jobs
people do while learning how to share your thoughts and ideas through creating and posting a short
video.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: FlipGrid

Description of Software: FlipGrid is a tool used to create a variety of videos or audio recordings. It
can be as simple as a 1 minute response, but also has many features such as backgrounds and
stickers that are easy to use and can allow students to be creative while getting comfortable with
technology. Therefore, it is helpful for introducing young students to different types of software, and
most will be very enthusiastic about being able to create on their own.

X Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

X Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation: The first part of the lesson will be where the kids learn about work and
earning wages in class. For homework, they will listen to a short podcast in which they are asked a
question to think about and come to class with an answer. The next day, we will discuss work further
by exploring different jobs and what people do in the community. I will explain that night’s
homework, which will be to create a flip video telling the class what job they want to do when they
grow up, and one thing that is involved in that job. Then we will move into the technology
instruction where I teach them how to make a video. First, I will pull up FlipGrid and walk the class
through how I make a video. To let them understand more, I will have the children come up in
groups so they can practice clicking the link and getting to the camera. While doing this, the rest of
the kids can be thinking about and writing down what they want to say. For homework, they will find
the link on the class website to make their video, with a parent’s assistance if needed. Finally, they
will watch their classmates’ videos and share in class the next day one thing they learned or
remembered.

Managing student learning: The students move from passive to active learners because they are
using their knowledge to create something new, which will then help their classmates learn more
about the topic and about each other. To manage the activity, I will have the students' videos be no
more than a minute long, and I will make sure they at least have some idea of what they want to say
before they go home to make the video.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression Videos, audio, and podcasting allow students to become
more engaged by hearing their teacher’s and classmates’ voices. Even with collaborative activities, a
lot of words to read look intimidating to students. In addition, multimedia allows students to

incorporate more expressions and voice tones more so than a written activity. This is important for
online learning, but is helpful for simple homework assignments as well.

Reflection: I feel like this lesson will impact student learning because, with the technology
component they are learning a new skill that they would not learn if we only did in person
discussions all the time. The students will also feel accomplished once they have finished their
creation, which I would look forward to, as well as seeing the different answers to the question
about what they want to be when they grow up.
