Science – Grade ( 1 )
September 2018 – June 2019
Teacher : Fibi Farid

I. Course description

The first grade science curriculum focuses on the introduction and development of
scientific concepts and skills necessary for students to investigate, discover, and
understand their world. The major themes include the science process skills, earth
science, physical science, and life science. Students learn about plants and animals, their
characteristics and needs. We compare living and non-living things. We explore movement and
machines. Weather, seasons, land and water forms are explored. We discuss the five senses
and learn how to take care of our health. The students learn and discover that they are part of
a universe that has moving objects and that they share the planet with many living things that
have similar needs,characteristics,and functions. Students should begin to develop an
understanding of their world and respect for all life on the planet.

III. Course objectives:
By the end of this year, the student will be able to :
 Identify the 5 senses and the body part associated with each sense.
 Differentiate between living things and non living things.
 Observe and explain that all animals need the same basic needs (food, shelter….).
 Identify physical characteristics of animals.
 Explain that the plant will die if its basic needs are not met.
 Identify and compare the major parts of a flowering plant including stems,
flowers ,roots and seeds.
 Explain that there are many kinds of plants on Earth.
 Describe the interdependence of living things such as food chains and animals using
plants as shelters.
 Recognize how people use natural resources.
 Identify different kinds of weather.
 Discuss stars and the fact that we can’t count all the stars in the sky.
 Determine that everything around us is matter.
IV. Course requirements:
 Daily attendance and participation in class activities
 Completion of homework and assignments and class projects on time
 Pass ongoing assessments throughout the year
 All required books and materials brought into class
 Write your name on all assignments. Any assignment turned in without a name will be
thrown away.
 Write all worksheet titles on your work.

 No homework or make-up work will be accepted after the test day.


 Copied assignments will receive a zero.

V. Classroom Rules:
 Be in your assigned seat (with materials) ready to work when the tardy bell rings.
Listen when the teacher is speaking. If you have a comment or question, raise your
hand until called upon.
 Class participation is required.
 Respect all property. (School property, personal property, and other's property).

.DO NOT SIT IN MY PLACE AND ASSUME THAT WHAT'S MINE IS YOURS

 Be respectful in word and action. ( Do not talk out of turn or use curse words )
 Finish our work on time.
 Do not walk around the classroom and school corridors.
 Stay awake, keep your head off your desk, and be quiet during announcements.
 No food, drink, candy or gum. A water bottle with water is the only exception.
 Always work hard.
 Be happy.
 Smile! 
 The bell does not dismiss the class. Students will be dismissed by the teacher once the
room is in order.
 ALL school rules apply in class. This includes the dress code, the restriction on
electronic devices, the tardy policy, etc.

Your success in the classroom is dependent on your success with the material as well as
with your compliance to the preceding classroom expectations and policies. Please know them
well and ask your teacher about them if there is a problem or need for clarification. Any
infractions of the preceding expectations and policies will be dealt with at the
teacher’s discretion

VI. Course Materials


 You will need to bring the following materials with you to class each day:
- 2 spiral notebooks. ( covered in green )
- Pencils and erasers.
- Colored pens/pencils (no fluorescent colors).
- Scissors
- Green Plastic folder
- Binder with 20 jackets ( covered in green )
- 4 Highlighter pens ( different colors )
- Blue tack
- Glitter foam
- Lab coat and goggles

- 2 plastic cups.

Quarter grading : 80% of course work

20% quizzes
10% class participation
20% homework
10% class work
20% projects
20% Term ( Quarter Exams )

Semester grading
40% 2 quarters grading (2x20%)
10% semester test

Year grading
100% for 2 semesters
