Step 2: Live Load (Lr)

As per 5.2.1

f) Minimum Roof Live Load (Lr): 1.0 kPa (20 lb./ft2) on the horizontal projected area of the
roof. The minimum roof live load may alternatively be determined in accordance with ASCE
7, but shall not be less than 0.72 kPa (15 psf). The minimum roof live load shall be reported
to the Purchaser.

Let use for the purposes of the exercise 20 lb./ft2

Step 3: Snow Load (lb./ft^2) = 0 {In our case we are in the island of Trinidad}

Step 4: EXTERNAL PRESSURE lb./ft^2 = Pe = 5.19 LB/FT^2 ( 1 INS OF H20)

Step 5: LOAD COMBINATIONS (API 650 Ed. 13 /5.2.2)

e) Gravity Loads:

1) DL + (Lr or Su or Sb) + Fpe Pe = 9.72 lb. /ft^2 + 20 lb. /ft^2 + 0.4*5.19 lb. /ft^2 =

t is the corroded roof thickness;

p is the uniform pressure as determined from load combinations given in 5.2.2.

MAX SPAN b= For the purposes of this article I will use b=84 in (2,100 mm), --The reader can
calculate the maximum span using the formula “t*(1.5Fy/P)^0.5“ since there are all the
necessary parameters if the result is smallest than the one shown below change it and re-do
the calculation.

Step 7: # Rafters = Perimeter / 7 ft. (84in)

# Rafters = pi x dia. / 7 = 9.644 rafter~~~~12 Rafters

SPAN b’ = Perimeter / # Rafters = 3.14*21.5 ft. / 12 = 5.63 ft
