Perfect Binding
Perfect binding is the process of binding book blocks to wraparound covers
through the use of hot melt (or cold) glue.
1. The spine of the binding edge of the sheets is prepared by a milling and notch-
ing process which breaks down the paper fibers to be bound by the glue.
3. Wrap around covers are presented to the book block with the appropriate
upward force and front and back nipping pressure to ensure a strong binding
and a clean professional finish.
To maintain the integrity of the binding and minimize the potential for sheets
becoming loose it is recommend that the spine of the book not be broken.
This occurs when the book is opened and pressed completely flat or folded
back in a manner so as to expose the adhesive between the sheets.
Good Bad
III
For optimum binding strength and the highest quality finish, the following
conditions are recommended:
Corner is round.
IV
Hot Melt Glue
WARNING
- Hot melt glue is inedible. Keep this glue away from children. If chil-
dren eat any glue, call a doctor immediately.
Hot melt glue is solid at room temperatures. It becomes softer when the tempera-
ture is above 100 ˚C (212 ˚F), and turns liquid as the temperature rises. Liquid
glue permeates the sheets and turns solid again and adheres to sheets after the
temperature falls. This glue is different from starch glue and chemical synthetic
glue that adhere as they dry.
Hot melt glue will deteriorate if it is heated over a long period, even if new glue is
continuously added to the tank. It will also deteriorate if overheated. Melted glue
will turn to gel after it has been heated for 50 hours.
Deteriorated glue becomes darker. Replace the deteriorated glue with a new
supply before doing any binding.

When using the pre-melter, apply sufficient pellet inside the tank
up to the "glue level scale."
Apply
- Heater of the Pre-melter is installed at the bottom of the tank. Glue in the tank is heated
sufficient from the bottom, so the glue in the upper part of the tank will not become high temperature.
pellet - Glue in the upper part is not heated and deteriorated. It also prevents the heated glue at
lower part from oxidizing by exposing the air. Even if not using a lot of glue for the binding
operation, fill the tank with glue up to the "glue level scale."
- Glue is deteriorated rapidly when it is heated over 200 degrees Celsius (392 Fahrenheit).
Replace the As it is deteriorated, it turns yellow and becomes sticky. The sticky glue may stack inside
the pump or the nozzle, and the glue will not be supplied.
