Master of Science in Communications Engineering at TUM
Winter Semester 2022/2023
Statement of Purpose
Applicant: Ceyda YÜZBAŞIGİL
I hereby declare that I wrote the following statement of purpose independently without using any sources or auxiliary means other than the ones indicated and that everything stated is true to the best of my knowledge.
I am Ceyda Yüzbaşıgil, a graduate of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department
of Middle East Technical University. I am writing this letter to express my interest in the master's program in communications engineering (MSCE) at Technische Universität München (TUM) to pursue my academic interest in the communications system. Throughout the senior year of my bachelor's education, my specialization fields were control and signal processing. Since I had the opportunity to observe the signal processing field in the communication systems at my internship in ASELSAN and investigate the image processing and control areas at my internship in Ford Otosan, I wanted to dive deep into both areas. After my graduation, I started to work in ASELSAN as a Radar System Engineer who focuses on algorithm design for radar detecting and tracking skills. Since September 2021, I have been working on radar systems, and it becomes more interesting day by day. Thus I decided to pursue a master's degree in communication systems. Also, it is clearly seen that information and telecommunication technology is open to development and has increasing popularity among the industries. These are other reasons for my decision on the MSCE program. During my internship at Ford Otosan, I worked on a project that focuses on how to make a truck a driverless vehicle. For this project, I designed a system with a camera that warns the driver of lane tracking and detection of traffic signs. The system was the first step of a big driverless truck design project. After my graduation, working as a Radar System Engineer I have started to use similar methods in my internship project. The control field courses I took gave me a perspective of looking at the big picture. For my current project, I am assuming the radar is a sensor like the camera I used in my internship and I am approaching with a similar method as I used at the lane tracking for the tracking skills of radar. This method provides us with better time management. Also, showing this analogy helps my colleagues to look in different perspectives as I do. Especially, for some problems we faced, such analogies made a huge impact on the solution. Based on my individual research I observed that since TUM has a strong bond with the German industry, not only academically but also TUM allows its students to study the new concepts practically. Also, the MSCE program approaches the communications field through various paths that the students could follow. Among the different approaches, I would like to work on signal processing in communications technology with machine learning techniques. This innovative concept is one of the most interesting parts of the communication technologies for me since I consider that a great part of the developments in communications would occur with the help of machine learning methods. Besides these modules, the MSCE program offers different elective courses and these make the program compatible with the interest of each student. Besides, the specialization fields I previously stated cover a pretty large set of different concepts; therefore, having researched the curriculum of the MSCE, I believe that I will be able to further improve my knowledge and capabilities thanks to the courses and research opportunities MSCE comprises. Besides the program, TUM has a cultural mosaic in itself. I believe that working in a team of people from various backgrounds is a key to great personal and technological developments. Thus, such a university environment that gets people from around the globe with different backgrounds together puts TUM in a special place among the other universities.
To conclude, when I consider my interest in the communications area, my academic
background, and my short experience in the radar industry, I would like to improve myself academically with a master's education. The MSCE program at TUM makes me excited to steep myself in the area with various, enthusing, and cutting-edge concepts. Also, engineering education in Germany is totally a life-changing experience since German culture is one of the best-known cultures with deep-rooted engineering history. It becomes an irreplaceable experience since TUM is one of the leading universities in this culture. Thus, I would like to be a part of TUM with such a great program.
