Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer

Homework 4
Problem 1
Air enters an insulated diffuser operating at steady state at 1 bar, 255K, and 260m/s and exits with a velocity
of 130 m/s. Employing the ideal gas model and ignoring potential energy,
Determine (a) the temperature of the air at the exit, (b) The maximum attainable exit pressure, in atm

Problem 2
An inventor claims to have developed a device requiring no work input or heat transfer, yet able to produce
at steady state hot and cold air streams as shown in below figure. Employing the ideal gas model for air and
ignoring kinetic and potential energy effects, evaluate this claim.

Problem 3
Air enters to the compressor at 300K and 1bar, then the air enters to the heat exchanger at 20bar, the process
is a constant pressure and the heat is 4000KJ/kg. The air is expanded at the turbine. The isentropic efficiency
of the turbine and the compressor are 80% and 98%. Determine
a) The inlet temperature at the turbine.
b) The thermal efficiency
c) The net power if the mass flow rate is 50Kg/s

Problem 4

Superheated steam at 20MPa, 700ºC , enters the turbine of a vapor power plant. The pressure at the exit of
the turbine is 0.10Mpa, and liquid leaves the condenser at 26ºC. Then liquid is compressed to 20MPa across
the pump. The turbine and pump are isentropic. For the cycle, determine

(a) The net work per unit mass of steam flow, in kJ/kg.

(b) The heat transfer to steam passing through the boiler, in kJ per kg of steam flowing.

(c) The thermal efficiency.

(d) The heat transfer to cooling water passing through the condenser, in kJ per kg of steam
condensed.
