ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHT WITH ORVM TECHNOLOGY:

ABSTRACT :

Conventional headlight systems incorporate fixed direction lamps , with higher or lower beam
configuration which is not suitable to night driving as they donot properly illuminate the road during
turning or gradient travel of vehicle. Adaptive headlight system installed in new generation vehicles
use the ORVM technology which does provide lighting in the proper direction especially during uh
hill and down hill travel . hence there is a need of such system which will give global positioning of
head lamp in minimum time.

The adaptive headlight system with spiral path positioned enables to position the headlight
in any global position in minimum path travel using a single motor and low cost automation. Project
aims at design , development test and analysis of this spiral path generation mechanism

Solution to the above problem

The solution to the above problem is offered by application of adaptive headlight technology which
help to turn the headlights in the direction of steering and thereby providing beter lighting and
elimination of blind spots to a great extent.

CONVENTIONAL ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM :

The model is added with steering operated tilting headlight mechanism …this
also will be motorized .This is feature adds to the safety feature of the vehicle
…such that when the vehicle turns only the wheels turn in the said direction
initially …not the chasis …hence the lamps remain focused in a different
direction other than desired turn …..this makes driver blind momentarily for
the road conditions in the direction of turn …..this may lead to accident
…..incorporating the above said facility will reduce the chances of accident.
This is conventional system that is nowadays accommodated with majority of adaptive headlight
control mechanism. Tough the system offers the direction control of the headlights as per the
direction of steering there are certain dis-advantages which are listed below:
PROBLEMS WITH CONVENTIONAL ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHT CONTROL :

As shown in the above graphic the conventional adaptive headlight technology with single plane
direction control by mere steering of the headlight proves in-effective or inadequate when the
vehicle moves on a steep incline (up-hill ) when the headlight point towards the sky thereby
providing poor light or pointing extreme downward when travelling steep decline (down hill).

Thus there is need to modify this system such that it will provide a multi-plane orientation to the
headlight such that it will provide adequate illumination as shown below :

It is proposed to construct one such system with the help of high speed spiral path positioned
mechanism in combination to headlight mechanism. The system will be as discussed below.
COSTRUCTION & WORKING OF ORVM TECHNOLOGY HEADLIGHT SYSTEM :

The system comprises of the following parts :

1. Steering mechanism :
This is a power steering mechanism that is driven by 30 rpm motor. Motor carries a 12 teeth
1.2 module pinion that drives a gear wit 50 teeth . This gear carries a shaft that drives the
pinion that engages in the rack for steering. Pinion is 1 module 15teeth where as he rack is 1
module 100 mm length. The motor when operated will rotate the pinon of rack and there by
turn the wheel and thereby the headlight towards left or right.
2. Incline illumination or UP/DOWN of headlight :
This mechanism resembles the orvm technology in automated mirrors used in cars. The
motor carries a1.25 module 12 teeh pinion engaging in a 1.25 module 60 teeth gear of
nylon, held in a swivel bracket. The Swivel bracket also carries the headlight mechanism.
Hen motor is rotates the pinion will make the internal gear to rotate and thereby the
headlight will move up/down .
3. Central Console with direction control switches ;
The central console comprises of the limit switches ( 4 no’s) ,that control the signal to the
two motor sets as mentioned earlier. The central console works with three switches in
tadem namely ,
A_SP_ST switch for Healight ON/OFF
B_DP_DT switch for headlight & Steering Left /right
C_DP_DT switch for headlight UP/ DOWN motion.

4. The frame and chasis :


This is the body of the vehicle with shafts and wheels.

Working :
1. Start the SP/ST switch to start headlight
2. Operate Switch _B _ Press the Joystick left , steering motor will turn the vehicle towards left
and the headlights will turn left.
3. Reverse Switch _B _ Press the Joystick right , steering motor will turn the vehicle towards
right and the headlights will turn right.
4. Operate Switch _C _ Press the Joystick front , swivel motor will turn the swivel bracket down
and the headlights will turn down
5. Reverse Switch _C _ Press the Joystick back , steering motor will turn the vehicle towards
down and the headlights will turn UP
