The World Obesity Federation (WOF),
a global organisation that takes a
holistic view of obesity and helps
align resources to address it, has said
that stereotyping of people facing
weight problems has severely negative
repercussions. To address this, WOF,
in a statement published recently in
the journal ‘Obesity Reviews’, has sug-
gested a few steps to counter ‘weight
stigma,’ which is defined as pervasive
misconceptions associated with
higher body weight.
How to counter the stigma
 As per WOF, the term ‘obesity’
should be used to refer only to indi-
viduals with an obesity diagnosis,
which is when there is excess or
abnormal accumulation of fat in the
body that presents a risk to health.
