PREFACE

Praise be to God Almighty for the blessings of his grace, and that we were given the
opportunity to be able to complied a paper entitled “ Identify noun phrase verb phrase,
adjective phrase, adverb phrase, and prepositional phrase” is properly and correctly, and on
time.

The purpose of writing this paper is to fulfill the assignment given by Mrs. Ade
Silvana M.pd, as a lecturer in syntax courses. In preparing this paper, we as authors faced
many challenges and obstacles, but with the help of various parties, this paper was finally
completed.

The author realizes that this paper is still far from perfection, both in terms of
preparation and material. Therefore, the author hopes that criticism from all readers can help
the author perfect the next paper. Finally, I hope that this paper can be useful and add to the
development of insight for readers.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

A. The Background

In learning English, we must first know the basics. So that it can help us learn
more complex sentence forms one of which is learning the basic forms, Sentence,
pronunciation and grammar, This paper contains material on the structure of Phrase,
namely: Noun phrases, adjective phrases, adverb phrases, verb phrases, and
prepositional phrases. By studying this paper or material, we can understand the
procedures of the English language and become fluent.

B. Purpose of Writing
1. To know definition of phrase
2. Can identify Noun Phrases
3. Can identify Adjective Phrases
4. Can identify Adverb Phrases.
5. Can identify Verb Phrases
6. Can identify Prepositionall Phrases

DISCUSSION

A. PHRASE
A phrase consists of the describe and the describe. Phrases are also groups of
word that have their own meaning and are part of sentence. A phrases is a collection
of two or more words that can be used as a grammatical unit in a sentence (Richad, el
at.2002). phrases are also defined as grammatical units consisting of two or more
words that do not exceed the limits of the function of clause elements (Ramlan,
1982:138). In other words, the phrases only occupies one function in the clause,
namely the function of subject (s), predicate (p), object (o), complement, and
description (ket). 1
“In linguistic analysis, a phrases is a group of words or perhaps a single word
that functions as the syntactic organization of a sentence, a unit in the hierarchy of
Agrammatics” (Oxford Dictionary, 1986). A phrases is a series of words, the words of
which are not verbs, but had + modifier. Head (the word being described), Modifier
(the word describing). Generally, in phrase, the modifier comes before the verb.

B. PHRASE STRUCTURE
The phrase structure is ag group of phrases seen from the equation of its
distribution with the category (type, class, or class) of word. Based on the category,
phrases can divided into several groups, namely:

1) Noun Phrases (NP)


A noun phrases is a group of two or more that begins with a noun ( a
person, place, or thing ) containing a modifier ( e.g., the, a, of their, with her).
Noun phrases act as nouns. In noun phrases, the modifier can come
before/after the noun, phrases can also be preceded by a pronoun.2
For example:
a) The dog with fleas

A noun phrase is a word that function as a subject or object or


complement with in a sentence. .

a) She read a book

Noun can be replaced by a pronoun (e.g. he, she , he, it, them). Looking with
a pronoun.
It relaxes me
I know them
She was him

2) Adjective Phrases ( Adj V )


An adjective phrases is a group of words headed by an adjective that
describe a noun or a pronoun. In English grammar, an adjective phrase is a
group of words that functions as an adjective in a sentence. An adjective
headword may be accompanied by modifiers, determiners, and or qualifiers
(all of which are called dependents). Also known as an adjective phrases.3
Adjective phrases modify nouns. They may be attributive (coming
before the noun) or predicative ( appearing after the linking verb), but not all
adjectives can be used in both positions. Example :

a) She had blue eyes.

3) Adverb Phrases (Av P)


An adverb phrase is one of the phrases that has the same meaning as an
adverb phrase in a sentence. An adverb phrase is formed from a group of
words consisting of an adverb and a qualifier combination. An adverb is
formed from an adverb, which functions as a head that can be modified and
followed by a modifier called a postmodifier, or a modifier can also be located
at the beginning before the adverb, called a premodifier. Adverb phrases can
also be located at the beginning or end of a sentence.4

The results of observations of the Indonesian language only obtained


six adverbs, namely: yesterday, earlier, later, tomorrow, the day, after
tomorrow, and now.5 Adverbial phrases also usually answer how, where, why,
or when question. Consider the following sentence :

a. parked the car right there. ( where you parked the car? Right
there )

c. I’ll do it in a minute.

4) Verb Phrases (VP)


A verb phrases is a phrase that consists of an auxiliary verb and an
ordinary verb. The helping verb always precedes the main verb. A helping
verb includes forms of “be” such as, ( am, is, are, was, were, being and been).
From of “have” such as,( has, and had ). From of “do” such as (does dan did).
From of “can” such as ( could, will, would, and sall ), Froms of “should” such
as ( may, might and must). Ex:
a. I’m reading a book right now.

b. John walks to school every day.

The verb phrase is also another very important syntax category. Some
example include phrases like the following :
Snore
Like marry
Give a prize to John
Want to leave
Can lift 100 pounds
A verb phrase can be used as the predicate of a sentence, as in the example
below:
a. Pija and Nora like English

b. Intan want to leave

c. The dog is running
VP

Certain verbs, such as snore, swim, talk, trow, take and die, can from a verb
phrase all by themselves, verb of this sort called intransitive verbs, certain
other verbs form a verb phrase by combining with a noun phrase. Such verb
are called transitive verbs, the noun phrase with which a transitive verbs
combines is its direct object, as in the following examples:
Like Mary
Chase cars
Annoy three burly sergeants

5) Prepositional Phrase (PP)


A prepositional phrase is a phrase that begins with a preposition (e.g., to,
from, with, for, at, in, on, under, about, through) as a marker and is followed
by a noun phrase. The functional formula can be seen as:6

For Example:
a. She likes study in the library

CONLUSION

A. CONCLUSION

A phrase is a collection of two or more words that can be used as a grammatical


unit in a sentence, occupying only one function in the clause. It consists of the word
the “describe” and “describe” and is part of the sentence in linguistic analysis a phrase
is a group of words or a single words that function as the syntactic organization of a
sentence, a unit the hierarchy of the Agrammatics. The words in phrase are not verbs
but have a modifier, usually preceding the verb. Phrase Structure is a Noun phrase,
adjective phrase, adverb phrase, verb phrase, and prepositional phrase.
