INTRODUCTION

 Twentieth-century music was preceded by several late


Romantic era developments, including impressionism and
neoclassicism. In the 1900s, expressionism, serialism,
modernism, electronic music, minimalism, experimental
music, and chance music emerged and became intellectually
based musical styles.

 20th Century Musical Style


REFLECTION

 Musical style diverged during the 20th century as it


never had previously Aleatory, electronic music, and
concept music were all developed during this century.
Jazz and ethnic folk music became important
influences on many compesers during this century.

 Music in the 20th Century changed dramatically, due to


the hostile political climate, advances in technology,
and huge shifts in style. Many composers, struggling to
build any further on the music of generations gone by,

reacted against established musical trends, creating
exciting new forms and styles.

REFLECTION

 Impressionist music focused on suggestion


and atmosphere, conveying moods and
emotions aroused by the subject rather than a
detailed tone-picture. It is a musical
movement that aims to place emphasis on
tone colour, atmosphere and fluidity
essentially evoking a mood for listeners
through techniques and sound.
 Impressionism in music was a movement
among various composers in Western
classical music (mainly during the late 19th
and early 20th centuries) whose music
focuses on mood and atmosphere,
“conveying the moods and emotions aroused
by the subject rather than a detailed tone‐
picture”.

 Expressionism

 In conclusion, Expressionism is a movement


that revolutionized the art world. It
encouraged artists to be true to themselves
and to express their emotions freely. It was a
departure from the conventional conservatism
of the time and helped to shape the art world
as we know it today.

 Expressionism refers to art in which the
image of reality is distorted in order to make it
expressive of the artist’s inner feelings or
ideas.

GENERAL REFLECTION

 Impressionism and Expressionism are part of


the 20th century music and Impressionism is
detailed tone-picture and Expressionism is it
encouraged artist to be true to themselves
and to express their emotions freely.
