Fahim: The current minimum wage in Bangladesh is BDT 8,000 (US$75) per month for
unskilled workers in the ready-made garment industry. This was set in 2018 and has not been
revised since
Abir: Is it Enough?
Fahim: A study by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies found that the
minimum wage is only enough to cover about two-thirds of the basic needs of a worker
and their family.
In 2023, Bangladeshi unions are demanding a tripling of the minimum wage to BDT 22,000-
24,000 (US$203-$222) per month. They are also asking for the government to review the
minimum wage annually rather than every five years.

Fahim: I just think how pregnant woman can bear his day to day expense because that time
she didn’t work?
Abir: The maternity benefit is payable to a woman worker for a period of 8 weeks preceding
the expected date of delivery and 8 weeks following the date of delivery.
