Introduction

New Features Engine

The Cat 3508B EUI engine continues to power the D11R and
D11R Carrydozer. Rated at 634 kW (850 hp), this electronically
controlled engine now meets EPA and CARB emissions
requirements for year 2000.

Fuel Tank
Fuel tank refill capacity is increased from 388 gallons (1471 liters)
to 425 gallons (1609 liters).

Information Management
Like the D11R Carrydozer, the D11R now features the Caterpillar
Vital Information Display System (VIDS). Exclusive to Caterpillar,
VIDS is an advanced diagnostic and equipment management tool
designed to provide lower operating cost per ton. (See page 11
for details.)

Electronic Controls
The D11R now features the same electronic dozer and ripper
controls found on the D11R Carrydozer. The low effort, comfortable
to hand controls are 100 percent electronically controlled —
no mechanical linkage. These electronic controls offer several
automatic functions that significantly lower operator fatigue,
resulting in increased productivity. (See page 26 for details.)

Automated Blade Assist

The dual tilt D11R tractor now incorporates AutoPitch, an
automated blade feature like that of the Carrydozer. Automated
Blade Assist (ABA) is a semi-automatic dozer control function that
increases efficiency and reduces operator workload by automating
some of the more common blade functions. The ABA system
for D11R Carrydozer also consists of AutoPitch, AutoSpread,
AutoReturn and Automatic Tilt Limiting functions. (See page 27
for details.)

Keypad
Like the D11R Carrydozer, the new D11R keypad allows the
operator to access and acknowledge machine and system information
provided by VIDS, activate automatic dozer functions, access
gauge values, customize factory settings and change operator
preferences on the message center module. The easy-to-use keypad
works in conjunction with VIDS, allowing the operator to view
details from alert messages for assistance in diagnosis and for fast
troubleshooting. (See page 28 for details.)

4 TEJB5014-02 Cat D11R and D11R Carrydozer Track-Type Tractor November 1999
Introduction

Power Train
The D11R and D11R Carrydozer now feature AutoShift which,
when activated, automatically shifts the transmission from first
forward to second reverse and from second reverse to first forward.

Automatic shifting features easier upshifts and downshifts to

increase operator productivity, reducing fatigue and shortening
cycle times.

Main Frame
The D11R and D11R Carrydozer feature new pinned-on fender
beams that improve main frame life by eliminating weld-on
brackets on the case and frame.

Blade
The D11R Carrydozer now has replaceable, hard steel wear
plating and router bits for added wear resistance, additional
strength and durability.

Rippers
Like the D11R, the D11R Carrydozer now features two ripper
configurations to match your applications:

• Single-shank ripper — best used in severe applications where

penetration is difficult or when more lift is needed. The narrower
ripper frame decreases clogging and slab retention.
• Multi-shank ripper now available — best used in less severe
applications or when ripping close to a wall. This configuration
offers the flexibility of one, two or three shanks. A single-shank
should be used in the center pocket only and should not be used
for severe ripping applications.
NOTE: This product bulletin is written as an overview of the
improved D11R (PIN: 7PZ) and D11R Carrydozer (PIN: AAF)
as they exist at introduction in December 1999.

November 1999 TEJB5014-02 Cat D11R and D11R Carrydozer Track-Type Tractor 7
Engine

The Cat 3508B EUI engine powers the D11R and D11R Carrydozer.
Rated at 634 kilowatts (850 hp), this electronically controlled engine
has a 25 percent torque rise for excellent lugging performance.
The 3508B meets EPA and CARB emissions requirements for
year 2000.

The engine block has internal ribbing around the large diameter
camshaft bore. The 3508B block services the 3508 block by using
a thick walled camshaft bearing.

The crankshaft is a carbon steel forging, fully heat treated, super-

finished and dynamically balanced for the deep bowl piston.

The camshafts are large in diameter. The injector lobe width and
wide rollers reduce the contact stress to allow for camshaft reuse
at overhaul. The valve lobes provide valve lift for open air flow
into the combustion chamber.

The cylinder heads feature coolant passages that provide cooling

to the valves for increased valve life.

The rear gear train features steel forged and carburized heat
treated gears for improved service life. The rear gears are wide
with a gear tooth geometry that reduces stress due to increased
injection pressure.

The two-piece pistons have a deep bowl forged steel crown

which improves air/fuel mixing and reduces crevice volume.
The compression ratio is 14:1. The steel crown has oil drain
back holes with an aluminum skirt that is chamfered as an
additional oil control.

The internal restriction and injector actuation (rear gear train,

camshaft, lifters, pushrods, and rocker arms) of the 3508B
electronic unit injectors allow for high injection pressure, good
fuel atomization and short injection duration. These features help
improve fuel efficiency and reduce white smoke.

8 TEJB5014-02 Cat D11R and D11R Carrydozer Track-Type Tractor November 1999
Engine

The D11R and D11R Carrydozer uses the proven electronic features
of the 3508B EUI engine, and incorporates an Engine Control
Module (ECM). It’s features include:

• Control Throttle Shifting. Control Throttle Shifting regulates Control Features

engine speed during directional shifts to reduce driveline stress
for smoother shifts and longer component life.

• Ether Starting Aid Integration. Ether is automatically injected

by the ECM when engine speed is present and the jacket water
temperature is below 10° C (50° F). A switch input is also
provided to the ECM to allow the operator to manually inject
ether. This system improves reliability.

• Cold Cylinder Cut-out Strategy. The cold cylinder cut-out

strategy reduces white exhaust smoke after start-up and during
extended idling in cold weather. The ECM automatically turns
off one injector at a time during idling and determines if the
cylinder is firing. The strategy reduces emissions and extends
the component life of the engine.

• Elevated Low Idle. The elevated low idle feature regulates proper
engine coolant temperatures for extended component and engine
life. For temperatures less than 60° C (140° F), engine idle speed
is automatically raised to 1300 rpm. For temperatures between
60° C and 70° C (140° F - 158° F), elevated low idle operates
from 1300 rpm to 1000 rpm. For temperatures greater than
70° C (158° F), elevated idle is disabled and engine speed
returns to low idle.

• Electronic Injector Trim. The ECM compensates for variations

in unit injector timing and fuel discharge, so that every electronic
trim (E-trim) unit injector functions with its own characteristics.
During manufacturing, a four digit number (E-trim code) is etched
on the top surface of the injector tappet, designating the injector’s
E-trim characteristics. The E-trim code for each injector is
programmed into the ECM.

November 1999 TEJB5014-02 Cat D11R and D11R Carrydozer Track-Type Tractor 9
Engine

When replaced, the new injectors E-trim code must be programmed

into the ECM through Electronic Technician (ET). If the new
trim code is not programmed, the previous injector’s characteristics
are assumed. E-trim codes should be reprogrammed as quickly
as possible to optimize engine performance and prevent damage.

If a new Engine Control Module is installed, all the injector

E-trim codes must be programmed using the ET service tool.

• Flash Capability. The ECM can be reprogrammed with the

ET service tool. This eliminates the need to open up the ECM
and replace the personality module. Flash programming reduces
the time necessary to upgrade the engine software module,
improving machine uptime.

Engine Protection • Automatic Engine Overspeed Control. The automatic engine

overspeed control helps keep the operator from overspeeding
the engine. This system is meant to assist the operator in
controlling engine speed, but is not intended to be used as a
retarder. Third speed reverse on slopes is still not recommended.

The engine ECM continually monitors engine speed. When

the engine speed reaches 2300 rpm, a Level 2 warning flashes.
At 2500 rpm, a Level 3 warning flashes while the ECM sends
a signal to the solenoid valve. The solenoid valve signals the
implement control valve to increase pump pressure to main relief.
The increased torque created by the hydraulic pump slows the
vehicle and engine down to an appropriate level.

10 TEJB5014-02 Cat D11R and D11R Carrydozer Track-Type Tractor November 1999
Engine

• Exhaust Temperature Alert and Derate. The engine ECM

warns the operator when the exhaust temperature is too high.
When temperatures reach a critical level (750° C/1382° F) for
more than 30 seconds, the ECM automatically derates the power
output of the engine by 2 percent, activating the Level 1 warning
light. Power continues to be limited until the temperature returns
below the critical level. If five Level 1 warnings occur without
powering down the ECM, the warning increases to Level 3.

An event is also recorded in the ECM and can be viewed with the
electronic service tool. A password is required to clear this event.

• Crankcase Pressure Alert. The engine ECM gets data from the
crankcase pressure sensor mounted on the camshaft cover and
warns the operator when the engine crankcase pressure is at an
unacceptable level. An event is recorded in the ECM and can
be viewed/cleared with the electronic service tool.

• Caterpillar Vital Information Display System (VIDS). Information Management

Exclusive to Caterpillar, VIDS is an advanced diagnostic and
equipment management tool designed to provide lower operating
cost per ton. It not only displays information in a “real-time”
mode, but it records and stores information. A message center in
the cab uses a three-category warning system to alert the operator
to machine system problems.

• Cat Electronic Service Tool. Electronic Technician (ET) is

a personal computer (PC) based service tool that allows the
technician access to the engine’s ECM. ET offers flash
programming, histogram capabilities and saves engine
status data.

November 1999 TEJB5014-02 Cat D11R and D11R Carrydozer Track-Type Tractor 11
Engine

Electronic Unit Injection With Electronic Unit Injection (EUI), the optimum fuel injection
timing and duration are electronically determined by input from
eight sensors and the throttle position. Some of the advantages
of the EUI system are:

• Fuel efficiency. With engine mounted sensors, injection timing

and duration are matched to load, RPM, engine temperature
and altitude. This means the system automatically provides the
optimal timing setting for the conditions and the most efficient
use of fuel.

• Cold start-up mode. During cold starts or extended cold idle the
ECM cuts out cold non-firing cylinders to reduce white smoke.
When the engine water temperature is below 60° C (140° F),
the fuel injection timing is retarded for engine protection.

• Simplified diagnostics with either an ECAP service tool or

Electronic Technician (ET). The EUI system contains advanced
diagnostics that provide quick reference to vital machine
information.

• Automatic altitude compensation. Engine is automatically

derated for altitudes above 2286 meters (7500 feet) at the rate of
3 percent per 305 meters (1000 feet). This feature helps prevent
excessive combustion temperatures and potential engine
component damage.

• Fuel consumption history. The Engine Control Module stores

information regarding engine fuel consumption. This can be
used as a management tool to plan engine and other major
component overhauls.

• Air filter restriction indicator. The engine’s electronic control

system determines air filter restriction by calculating pressure
drop across the filter. If restriction exceeds the allowable limit,
the engine will warn the operator and automatically derate,
protecting the engine from excessive exhaust temperatures.

12 TEJB5014-02 Cat D11R and D11R Carrydozer Track-Type Tractor November 1999
Engine

EUI offers superior reliability over mechanical systems because

it has fewer moving parts.

The “brain” of the EUI system is the Electronic Control Module.

It provides peak engine performance in all applications. Robust
electrical components are designed for tough mining conditions.

The eight-cylinder engine is turbocharged and aftercooled. To help

extend component life, it has a high displacement and low rated
speed of 1800 rpm.

To provide maximum heat transfer, the engine features oil-cooled

pistons and full-length water-cooled liners. Two-piece pistons with
a steel crown and aluminum skirt increase durability.

Engine
• 3508B engine delivers 25 percent torque rise for excellent
lugging capability.
• Electronic Unit Injection improves smoke control, fuel
efficiency, cold weather starting and diagnostics.
• EUI increases reliability by eliminating mechanical
hydraulic governor linkages.
• High displacement and low 1800 rpm reduce internal
stresses and extend life.

November 1999 TEJB5014-02 Cat D11R and D11R Carrydozer Track-Type Tractor 13
Cooling Systems

AMOCS Radiator The Advanced Modular Cooling System (AMOCS) provides

cooling capacity to 43°C (110°F), excellent serviceability
and durability.

Using a two-pass system, the AMOCS radiator provides a more

efficient heat exchange. The coolant is routed from a sectioned
bottom tank up the fan side, over the top of the core and down the
engine side of the core to the bottom tank. This flow pattern allows
the coolant to pass through the radiator twice for better cooling.

The modular core design permits removal of a single core without

removing the entire radiator, which reduces repair costs and
downtime. AMOCS also eliminates the top tank, side channels and
one sealing surface, making it more reliable and easier to service.

To reduce the potential for coolant leaks, brass tubes are welded
to a large, thick header, improving strength of the tube-to-header
joint. The radiator is isolation-mounted to minimize vibration
and stress damage.

Variable Speed Fan

The ECM regulates engine fan speed through a variable
displacement pump. The variable speed fan increases available
horsepower and reduces sound levels, making the tractor more
productive and fuel efficient.

Cooling Systems
• AMOCS two-pass coolant pattern improves engine
cooling.
• AMOCS design allows removal of single cores for repair.
• AMOCS brass tubes with tube-to-header joint reduce
chance of coolant leaks.

Power Train

The D11R and D11R Carrydozer use a torque divider to provide Torque Divider
high operating efficiency and driveline reliability.

Torque dividers combine the benefits of converter drive and

direct drive into a single system. Power flows through two paths:
6
75 percent of engine torque flows through the converter. The 1 5
remaining 25 percent flows directly to the transmission. Because 7
power flows through two paths, the D11R and D11R Carrydozer 2 8

delivers the broader load-handling capabilities of converter drive.

When power flows directly to the transmission, it also produces 3

higher peak drive efficiency with minimal dynamic torque. 4

The torque converter shields the driveline from sudden torque

shocks and vibration.

An efficient, well matched torque converter provides high drawbar

pull reserves at converter stall. 1 Ring gear
2 Flywheel
3 Sun gear
The torque divider provides the following advantages: 4 Planet gear
• High reliability 5 Turbine
6 Impeller
• Proven component design 7 Stator
• Low dynamic torque 8 Output shaft
• Optimal combination of operator efficiency and driveline
reliability
• Components are robust to absorb full engine power
• High drawbar pull at converter stall

A side benefit of the torque divider is its tendency to increase

engine lug all the way to converter stall. This gives the operator
additional feedback regarding the tractor’s speed and drawbar pull.

Torque Divider
• Power flows through two paths — 75 percent through the
converter and 25 percent directly to the transmission
• Offers broad-handling capabilities of converter drive and
operating efficiency of direct drive.
• High drawbar pull at converter stall.

Power Train

Transmission The Cat planetary powershift transmission is the industry

standard for high performance and durability. The D11R and
D11R Carrydozer transmission retains this proven design with
three speeds forward and three speeds reverse.

Engine power is carried by planetary gears and transferred to the

sun or ring gear, depending on operating demands. Four gears
share the load, compared to a single drive gear in a countershaft
transmission. The special modulation system permits fast speed
and directional changes. The large diameter oil-cooled clutch
packs absorb the energy of directional shifts for smooth machine
performance and increased operator comfort. Directional clutches
engage last and a modulating pressure valve helps ensure all
clutches engage smoothly.

Caterpillar designs and builds its transmissions to the highest

quality standards. Cat F37 friction material helps extend clutch life,
especially in applications that require frequent maneuvering. The
F37 friction material also reduces transmission oil contamination
compared to sintered bronze friction material used on competitive
machines. A continuous flow of oil lubricates and cools all clutch-
pack and bearing surfaces, which dissipates heat and increases
clutch life. Separate transmission and final drive oil reservoirs
help prevent cross-contamination.

To reduce interior and exterior sound levels, helical and spiral bevel
transfer gears are used in the bevel gear section of the transmission.
Precise placement of the bevel gear section within the machine
case helps maintain low sound levels.

The D11R and D11R Carrydozer feature the Cat planetary powershift
transmission. The structural and design features include:
• Disc and plate to directional clutches to accommodate power
• Bearing and gear capacity in forward gear train
• All bearings in bevel gear group have a large capacity for
high torque
• Large bevel gear set and bevel gear shaft
• Positive lubrication to all bearings and gear in bevel gear group
• Lubrication in planetary group to increase component life.

16 TEJB5014-02 Cat D11R and D11R Carrydozer Track-Type Tractor November 1999
Power Train

The Cat modular component design speeds up repairs and increases

machine uptime. It allows removal of the transmission for repair
without removing other components. For example, the transmission
and bevel gear can be removed without removing the ripper.

The precision manufacturing of Cat bevel gears and pinions

permits replacement of individual gears, instead of an entire gear
set. Because the gears are manufactured to exacting specifications,
it eliminates the need to lap and mate them into sets.

A new AutoShift feature allows the operator to preset the AutoShift

transmission to shift from first forward to second reverse and
from second reverse to first forward automatically when the
operator changes direction.

Automatic shifting features easier upshifts and downshifts, increasing

operator productivity, reducing fatigue, and shortening cycle times.

Operators can choose between manual shifting or the automatic

shifting feature, depending on the application and/or operator’s
preference.

• Cat F37 friction material helps extend clutch life.
• Lower interior and exterior sound levels due to carefully
placed bevel gears.

Brakes The brake system has thick separator plates (6 mm) and friction
disks (5.56 mm) for increased life and durability. It features large
diameter disks — 609.60 mm (24") for increased braking capacity.
The design features also include:
• Large capacity (50 percent greater power dissipation than
the D11N).
• Brake housing has cast-in ribs for more durability.
• Cooling oil valve controls 283.88 liters (75 gallons) per minute
of oil.
• Ten clutch disks provide optimal torque capacity on the clutch.
• The tapered roller bearing design provides increased service life.

Brakes
• Thick plates to improve brake service life.

Final Drives Elevated final drives are protected from ground and implement-
induced impact loads, increasing power train life. Double reduction
planetary final drive gears with tapered roller bearings spread torque
loads over four planetary gears for increased life. Durability is
increased by the generous number of mounting bolts.

The D11R and D11R Carrydozer feature large, strong final drives
for durability and long service life. Gears and planet carriers are
sized for high loads. The axle and spline are large for higher torque.
The support hub, made of high strength castings for increased life,
is large and strong at the inboard bearing to accommodate
higher drawbar pull. The large hub spline improves fatigue life.
The sprocket bearings are large for increased load capacity.
The double lip axle seal has sleeve bearings and wide seal
land on axle for improved component life.

Electronic Clutch/Brake System

The D11R and D11R Carrydozer feature a standard Electronic

Clutch/Brake (ECB) steering system. It delivers excellent
maneuverability, especially when making pivot turns. The steering
system features multi-disc, oil-cooled clutches and brakes that are
fade-resistant and adjustment-free. Brakes are spring-applied and
hydraulically released.

The steering system consists of two small levers that send signals
to control the steering valve. Finger Tip Controls allow easy
one-handed control of steering, machine direction and gear
selection with minimal effort.

Machine direction is controlled by a rotating knob, which can

be activated by the thumb of the left hand. Rotating the knob up
moves the machine forward. Rotating the knob down reverses
the machine. The middle setting places the machine in neutral.

To select gears, the operator uses the two buttons to the right of the
direction knob. The top button shifts the transmission to the next
highest gear, while the bottom button shifts to the next lower gear.

For added operator comfort, an electric switch adjusts the padded

armrest up and down. Fore/aft adjustment is controlled by a
manual lever on the front of the Finger Tip Control module.

The parking brake switch electronically locks the Electronic

Clutch/Brake system.

Electronic steering and transmission controls allow the operator

to work more precisely in confined areas and around obstacles.

NOTE: This feature introduced March, 1996.

Undercarriage

Cat Undercarriage The track roller frame alignment enables the track to better utilize
the wear material built into each track roller resulting in increased
life for both links and rollers. This patented technology is a
Caterpillar exclusive.

The D11R and D11R Carrydozer feature a strong track link.

Rail thickness opposite the track nuts as well as the thickness
of the bushing strap make the new link rugged and durable.

A special coating on the track bushing provides an abrasion and

corrosion resistant protective layer on the end of the bushing.
The coating significantly improves track sealability. This exclusive
technology improves machine reliability by reducing unscheduled
track maintenance.

The D11R and D11R Carrydozer track roller frames provide

additional front frame extension. This additional extension
provides for proper track adjustment to the 120 percent wear
limit of the U/C.

The D11R and D11R Carrydozer sprocket segments are designed

into the tractors. These segments are made from the same DH-3
steel as the Cat ground engaging tools and provide long wear life.
Additionally, the mounting system design enhances sprocket
durability and serviceability.

Attachment idler guards further improve U/C wear life. These guards
bridge the gap between the track roller frame and the idler and
substantially reduce the flow of abrasive material into the track
chain. The guard’s steel reinforced rubber construction allows them
to follow the oscillation of the idler yet be durable for long life.
Guards are recommended for high abrasion low impact applications.

Caterpillar is committed to offering customer’s superior

undercarriage value. Collectively, these features significantly
increase U/C component wear life, durability, and reliability,
and decrease customer’s U/C operating cost per hour.

Undercarriage

Caterpillar introduced the elevated sprocket design in 1977. Elevated Sprocket

After two decades and more than 95,000 machines, it has become
the industry standard for track-type tractors.

Caterpillar created the elevated sprocket to deliver the benefits of

suspended undercarriage. This design transfers implement shock
loads to the mainframe, so final drives, axles and steering
components are isolated from the harsh impact.

The elevated sprocket also keeps final drives and sprocket teeth
away from abrasive materials and moisture, resulting in longer
final drive and seal life.

Because more track is located to the rear of the roller frame, the
elevated sprocket improves traction and flotation. It also counteracts
front-end rise during heavy dozing and drawbar applications. D11R

Cat suspended undercarriage has a low center of gravity and wide

track gauge. When working in uneven or rocky conditions, the
bogie system keeps more track on the ground for increased
stability. Suspended undercarriage increases track performance
over uneven terrain and outperforms non-suspended oval track.

The suspended design makes tractors more stable in rocky

conditions because the track readily adjusts to match the ground
contour. The more track in contact with the ground, the greater the
machine stability. With 4444 mm (14'7") of track on the ground,
the D11R and D11R Carrydozer deliver exceptional balance.

The elevated sprocket and suspended undercarriage work together

to reduce shock loads to tractor components, to increase traction
and to give the operator a smoother ride. These benefits translate
into higher production and longer component life.

Undercarriage

Idler Caps To increase strength, durability and reliability, the undercarriage has
large idler caps with an abutment joint and a three-bolt mounting.

Equalizer Bar To improve life, the D11R and D11R Carrydozer equalizer bar
uses limited slip seals and oil-lubrication cross porting which
protect seals and ensures 100 percent fill.

The new crossporting design internally vents side to side across

bearing and eliminates the need for relief valves. Lube fitting is
capped for added protection.

To increase pin life, the center pin features an oil impregnated

powder metal bearing. The end bearing has a closer tolerance
for reduced wear.

The pivot shaft and pinned equalizer bar eliminate diagonal

braces, which improves ground clearance and track oscillation
increasing traction in all underfoot conditions.

Undercarriage
• Longer wearing sprocket teeth are elevated away from
abrasive material and moisture.
• Bogie-mounted suspension conforms to the ground,
providing exceptional side slope stability and traction.
• Track bushing coating improves track sealability.
• Strong track link.
• Equalizer bar crossporting design internally vents side to

Main Frame

The main frame is built to stand up to the high impact and Case and Frame
twisting forces of severe dozing and ripping. The following
features strengthen the full box-section main frame and prevent
torsional bending:
• One piece cast case with ripper & ROPS mounting
• Oil sump inside casting for protection
• Internal hydraulic tubing
• One piece cast front support with radiator guard mounts and
engine mounts
• Box-section main rails
• Cast equalizer bar saddle
• Heavy interior reinforcements

The D11R and D11R Carrydozer have a one piece cast front
support for added strength, durability, and life.

Robotic welding in critical areas ensures weld consistency and

strength. To reduce internal oil leaks, heavy steel tubing is pressed
into the case to minimize external hoses and to ensure a leak-free
power train oil system.

The pivot shaft runs through the main frame and connects to the
roller frames, allowing independent oscillation. The full-length
pivot shaft distributes the impact loads throughout the case and
reduces the bending stress on the case. This design eliminates
alignment problems and the need for diagonal braces on the roller
frames. Continuous rolled and welded top and bottom frame rails
help ensure homogeneous weld and material strength. The rugged
construction of the frame is designed for long life in the toughest
applications.

New feature:
• Pinned-on fender beam improves main frame life by eliminating
weld-on brackets.

The Cat Track-Type Tractor frames set the industry standard for
durability. Nothing illustrates the dependability of the Cat frames
better than the Cat tractors currently operating with more than
60,000 hours of service without any major frame repairs. It is not
uncommon for these machines to be rebuilt several times during
the frames’ life.

The tag link blade mounting brings the blade closer to the
machine for excellent maneuverability, machine balance and
blade penetration. The tag link also eliminates the need for
diagonal bracing because it transfers side loads to the main
frame instead of the dozer pusharms.

Like the D11R Carrydozer, the D11R now features Automated Automated Blade Assist (ABA)
Blade Assist (ABA). ABA is a semi-automatic dozer control that
increases efficiency and reduces operator workload by automating
some of the more common blade functions. The ABA system for a
dual-tilt D11R tractor consists of AutoPitch. The ABA system for
the D11R Carrydozer consists of AutoPitch, AutoSpread and
AutoReturn.

• AutoPitch allows the operator to preset blade pitch angles for

optimal performance during the dozing cycle: one setting each
for load, carry, spread and return. Once the AutoPitch key is
activated on the VIDS keypad, the operator can select the dozing
segment by pushing the yellow button on the left side of the
dozer handle.
• AutoSpread raises the blade at an operator selectable rate during
the spread/dump portion of the dozing cycle. AutoSpread is
activated on the keypad and is initiated by pushing the yellow
button on the left side of the dozer handle.
• AutoReturn will raise the blade fully at the end of the dozing
pass and then return the blade to a starting pitch and height to
begin the next dozing pass. AutoReturn is activated on the
keypad and is initiated when the tractor is placed into reverse.
• Automatic tilt limiting is featured on the D11R Carrydozer.
This function helps the operator to keep the pusharms from
interfering with the track. These automations of the dozing cycle
significantly reduce operator fatigue for increased performance.

The system consists of three display modules:

The Gauge Module consists of four analog gauges which display

engine coolant temperature, transmission oil temperature, hydraulic
oil temperature and fuel level.

The Speedometer/Tachometer Module includes an analog

tachometer, ground speed and gear/direction readout.

The Message Center Module provides a variety of component and

system information through a universal analog gauge and a digital
message readout display. The message center allows the operator
to access information on several machine systems. Some of these
functions include:
• Engine oil pressure
• Engine boost pressure
• Power train oil temperature
• Hydraulic pump pressure
• Blade height (D11R Carrydozer only)

The Message Center Module also utilizes a three-category warning

system to alert the operator of an abnormal, serious, or critical
machine condition.

The keypad allows the operator or service technician to access the

gauge values (real time), stored information and operator preferences.

The three-category alert system provides advisory information

on an exception basis to the operator via the message center on
abnormal machine conditions. The information is displayed when
conditions in a monitored system fall outside a prescribed setting
for ordinary operations.

Category I: Activates an alert indicator lamp when a system

condition has been identified. (No action is required at this time.)

Category II: A warning lamp (located above the gauge cluster)

flashes in addition to the Category I alert indicator lamp in the
display panel. Instructions are displayed on how machine operation
should be modified or which service should be performed.

Category III: The highest alert, sounds an audio action alert

in addition to the Category II alarms. The action lamp and alert
remain on until the system readings return to normal or the
machine is shut down.

Blades

D11R Blades All D11R blades feature a strong box-section design made of high
strength steel to resist twisting and cracking. Blade cutting edges
are made of Cat proprietary DH-2 steel, and end bits are made of
DH-3 steel, which have high tensile strength and stand up to the
most severe applications.

Rock guards and deflector shields on the back of the blade help
protect lift and tilt cylinders from rock spillover. The blade’s
large heel clearance makes it more effective in hard-to-penetrate
material. Heel clearance is the space between the bottom of the
blade frame and the ground.

Large pusharms to blade connectors and pins provide better

durability and wear life. Two-position tilt cylinder mounting offers
improved versatility for your specific applications. The two-position
design is unique to Caterpillar and features a standard, upright
setting for aggressive penetration, and a rear setting for increased
carrying capacity. Trunnions are large and forged for extended
wear life and strength.

All rotating joint assemblies use factory-installed shims to maintain

correct spacing. To reduce wear and simplify rebuilding, pusharm-
to-blade joints feature replaceable bearings.

To maximize productivity, users can choose from four blade options:

• Abrasion versions of the “U” blade and “SU” blade are available
to extend blade life in more severe applications. Abrasion blades
are equipped with rock guards, wear plates and extended wear
life cutting edges and end bits. With the increased popularity of
abrasion blades, Caterpillar has made the U and SU abrasion
blades the standard, recommended blade for the D11R.

• High-capacity universal blade offers maximum capacity and is

perfect for moving big loads over long distances. The “U” blade
has large blade wings and is ideal for stockpile work, reclamation,
charging hoppers or trapping for loaders.

32 TEJB5014-02 Cat D11R and D11R Carrydozer Track-Type Tractor November 1999
Blades

• Semi-universal blade is built for tough applications where

penetration is more important than capacity. The “SU” blade
is more aggressive in penetrating and loading material than
the “U” blade. The blade wings are designed for superior load
retention and penetration in tightly packed materials and for
finishing applications. It is also configured with a push plate
for pushloading scrapers.

The standard dual tilt improves load control during fill and
dumping. A single lever controls all blade movements, including
dual tilt.

Blades
• Rugged box-section design made of DH-2 steel.
• Large pusharms to blade connectors and pins for improved
durability and wear life.
• Two-position tilt cylinder mounting for improved
versatility.
• Larger trunnion ball for increased wear life.
• Dual tilt improves load control.

The Carrydozer blade features a strong box-section design made of D11R Carrydozer Blade
high strength, low alloy steel to resist twisting and cracking. Blade
cutting edges and end bits are made of Cat proprietary DH-2 steel,
which has high tensile strength and stands up to the most severe
applications.

Replaceable, hard steel plating is included for wear resistance,

additional strength and durability.

Standard rock guards and deflector shields help protect lift and
dump cylinders from rock spillover.

All rotating joint assemblies use factory-installed shims to

maintain correct spacing. To reduce wear and simplify rebuilding,
pusharm-to-blade joints feature replaceable bearings.

Blades

To maximize productivity, the Carrydozer “carries” material “inside”

the blade curvature. Carrying the material is more efficient because
it uses only one tenth of the drawbar power to carry material rather
than push it. This carried material increases the effective weight of
the tractor which enables pushing a larger pile of material in front
of the blade. These two effects combine to significantly increase
productivity. The material carried in the blade also enhances
operation on steeper uphill slopes.

Blade
• Blade significantly increases productivity through design.
• Wear-adjustable joints reduce maintenance time and costs.
• Router bits
• Additional wear plates

Rippers

With the D11R and D11R Carrydozer, the operator has an

exceptional view of the ripper tip. A large view hole in the single-
shank ripper frame provides a better view of the ripper tip.

The single-shank ripper carriage design increases shank life.

Heat treated cast spacer bars in the ripper carriage extend pocket
life and reduce shank notching. The large, one-piece shank provides
long life.

Ripper hydraulic lines feature Caterpillar’s XT-3 hoses for durability

and reliability in tough applications.

Pin puller hydraulic hoses are routed along lift cylinders to D11R
increase service life and hoses are larger in diameter to increase
response time for cold weather operation.

Two ripper configurations are available to match your applications:

• Single-shank ripper is the best choice in severe applications

where penetration is difficult or when you need more lift. The
shank is mounted close to the rear idler for excellent penetration
force. The narrower ripper frame decreases clogging and slab
retention. To maximize penetration, the hydraulic cylinders and
parallelogram linkage adjust ripper tip angle.

• In less severe applications or to rip close to a wall, use

a multi-shank ripper, new for the D11R Carrydozer.
This configuration offers the greatest flexibility with the
option of using one, two or three shanks. The parallelogram
linkage with hydraulically variable pitch adjusts the ripper tip
angle to maximize penetration. A single shank should be used
in the center pocket only, and it should not be used for severe
ripping applications.

If the tractor is not equipped with a single-shank ripper or a multi-

shank ripper, a counterweight is mounted to the rear of the tractor.
The counterweight provides proper tractor balance, resulting in
maximum productivity.
