Assignment 2, Trimester: Fall, Year: 2023
Course: EEE 2101 (Sec: C) Title: Electronics I
Full Marks: 40

Submission deadline: October 21, 2023 (Saturday), in class. Good luck!

1. [10]
[CO1]

Fig. 1
a) Considering the constant voltage model for the diodes (𝑉𝐷 = 0.7 V) find out
the equation of the transfer function (𝑣𝑂 vs. 𝑣𝑆 ) of the full wave rectifier
circuit shown in Fig. 1.
b) Draw the transfer function.
c) Draw the output waveform (𝑣𝑜 ) and input waveform (𝑣𝑆 ) in the same graph
for the following inputs.

i) ii)

iii) iv)
2. A voltage regulator is a circuit whose purpose is to provide a constant dc voltage [10]
between its output terminals. Fig. 2 shows a voltage regulator which uses a [CO2]
string of seven diodes to provide a constant voltage of about 5 V. Using piece-
wise linear model (𝑉𝐷0 = 0.68 𝑉, 𝑟𝐷 = 50 Ω) answer the following:

Fig. 2
a) Calculate the output voltage (𝑣𝑂 ) with no load and with source voltage (𝑣𝑆 )
at its nominal value (10 V).
b) Calculate the output voltage (𝑣𝑂 ) if there is a ±10% change in the power-
supply voltage. What is the percentage change in the regulated voltage (Δ𝑣𝑂 )
in this case?
c) Calculate the output voltage (𝑣𝑂 ) if a load of a 1-kΩ is connected. What is
the percentage change in the regulated voltage (Δ𝑣𝑂 ) in this case?

3. An input signal, 𝑣𝐼 = 4 sin 2000𝜋𝑡, is applied to the limiter circuit shown in [10]
Fig. 3. [CO1]

Fig. 3
Using the constant voltage drop model with 𝑉𝐷 = 0.7 V, answer the
following:
a) Depending on the conduction modes (‘on’ or ‘off”) of 𝐷1 and 𝐷2 how
many states can this circuit have? Draw circuit diagram for each state.
b) Write the equation relating input and output of the circuit.
c) Draw (to scale) the transfer characteristics (output versus input) of the
circuit. You must:
• Draw the axes.
• Label the axis variables along with units.
d) Draw (to scale) the input and output waveforms in a graph paper. You
must:
• Draw the axes.
• Label the axis variables along with units.

4. Fig. 4a shows the diagram of a clamper circuit. The input signal for the circuit [10]
is shown in Fig. 4b. Consider 𝑅𝐶 ≫ 𝑇, where 𝑇 is the time period of the input [CO1]
signal.
a) Explain the operation of the circuit.
b) Draw the input and the output waveforms in a graph paper.
