Quiz 1 Fatigue Test

1. Fatigue
2. The purpose of a fatigue test is to determine the lifespan that may be expected from a material
subjected to cyclic loading, however fatigue strength and crack resistance are commonly sought
values as well. The fatigue life of a material is the total number of cycles that a material can be
subjected to under a single loading scheme . A fatigue test is also used for the determination of
the maximum load that a simple can withstand for a specified number of cycles. All of these
characteristics are extremely important in any industry where a material is subject to fluctuating
instead of constant forces.
3-4.
- fatigue is due to the repeated loading and unloading of strains, forces, tensions and
fluctuating stresses.

– when a material is subjected to a force acting in different reactions at different times it can cause
cracking . In time this causes the material to fail at a load that is much less than its tensile strength, this
is fatigue failure. Vibration for example is a serious cause of fatigue failure.

5-6.
– sharp corners should be avoided.

- Corrosion should be avoided as this can cause fatigue cracks.

Quiz 2

1. Is a natural process that converts a refined metal into a more chemically stable form such as
oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or sulfide.
Ans. Corrosion

2. This corrosion prevention method involves dipping steel into molten zinc.
Ans. Hot – dip Galvanization

3. Is one of the most effective corrosion prevention methods around, combining the properties of
various metals to provide added strength and resistance to the resulting product.
Ans. Alloyed steel (stainless)

4. Is an engineering specialty that applies scientific, technical, engineering skills, and knowledge of
natural laws and physical resources to design and implement materials, structures, devices,
systems, and procedures to manage corrosion.
Ans. Corrosion engineering

5. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to prevent corrosion like paint, plastic, or powder.
Ans. Barrier coatings
6-10. Give 5 importance of corrosion prevention and control

 Rust and other corrosion forms can lead to safety issues and ruin the integrity of your
equipment and supplies.
 Without corrosion control, facilities will likely struggle with the repercussions from corrosion
 Preventing corrosion is not free, but it is less costly than fixing or replacing damaged systems
when it’s too late.
 Without preventative steps, facilities can have damage or complete loss of structures.
 Corrosion control treatment of drinking water is necessary to prevent deterioration of pipes and
fittings, which eventually leads to water loss and pressure loss.
