William:

The earliest doors are represented in the paintings of the Egyptian tombs which is believed to
be the literal doorway to the afterlife. Doors and gates are different, although they both serve as
the same function to protect what is outside from the inside, gates are generally placed outdoors
where else doors are mainly indoors. Gates are able to withstand heavy weather conditions but
a door will most likely breakdown in those harsh conditions.

Plain wood door also known as flush door is the most common door found inside a house or a
building. A flush door has a flat, smooth surface without the elaborate design work of a panel
door. A flush door is made up of a single solid piece of wood. Another similar type of plain wood
door is called panel door. The only difference between a flush door and a panel door is that the
design of a panel door features stiles and rails. Most house would want to build a flush door or a
panel door just because the cost of building it is cheap and serves its function as a segregation
between walls.

Soundproof doors are generally found in music studio/rooms or concert theatre. Basically,
anywhere where it involves the importance of sound movements. Soundproof doors are
constructed with many layers. When constructing a soundproof door, it is important to remember
the 4 principles which are mass, damping, decoupling and absorption. Basic form of a
soundproof door is constructed by thick layers of metal in the middle, rubber pieces at the sides
as well as styrofoam and spongy materials for the external textures. This is because in spongy
materials, there is air. Air is a good element to trap noise, hence when the music or concert is
playing, there is no echo that would affect the following noise.
John: (Fireproof and collapsible doors)

Fireproof doors
A fireproof door is a door with a fire protection rating used as part of a passive fire protection
system to reduce or stop the spread of fire and smoke between separate compartments of a
structure and to allow for safe egress from a building, structure or ship.

Ratings
A fire protection rating is basically a test of how long a fire protection system, in this case a door,
can withstand a standard fire resistance test. This will then determine the fireproof classification
of the doors. With a class A door being able to withstand fire exposure of up to 3 hours, class B
withstanding up to 1½ hours and class C up to ¾ of an hour etc. Different classification of
fireproof doors are used in different parts of a building, depending on the fire hazard of the area.
Class A doors are usually placed in areas that divides two buildings. Class B doors are are
placed in vertical communications in a building such as stairwells and elevators. Class C doors
are placed along corridors and partitions within rooms.

Components/Seals
An internal fire door leaf is typically made out of solid timber. It can be plain or panelled, with a
number of finishes. If glazing is required, this has to be done with fire resistant glass: the two
main types are Georgian wired and clear glass. Something that constitutes a greater threat to
people than the fire itself is the spread of smoke. Thus, it is a requirement for most fire doors,
especially for those whose function is to preserve an escape route, to provide a smoke control
function. Smoke seals are fitted around the doors to prevent the egress of smoke around edges,
containing its spread and facilitating safe evacuation from the building without hindering the
effective closure of the door. Another seal that may be fitted in fireproof doors are intumescent
seals. These seals remain dormant under normal conditions but expand greatly when heated,
closing any remaining gaps around the door and its frame, thus preventing spread of smoke and
flame. All fire door hardware (locks, latches, hinges, etc.) must be to fire rated standards. A fire
door must also have an automatic closing device, such as a door retainer, which permits the
free flow of traffic during everyday use and allow the door to self-close in the event of a fire. It is
an illegal practice to hold or wedge a fire rated door open.

Collapsible doors
The collapsible door is one which can be opened or closed by slight pull or push. This door is
used where the width of the door is large and space is insufficient to provide two-leafed hinged
shutters to open. This door is fabricated from thin mild steel sections. The collapsible door may
be made of single or double shutters; it depends on the size of the opening. It does not require
hinges for opening and shutters for closing. It occupies less space. Further, even the door is
closed, seeing through is possible. This type of door is mainly placed at the main entrances of
various buildings such as residential, commercial etc. These entrance doors provide high
security against burglars, vandals and other intruders. It is a popular choice for the protection of
domestic windows and patio doors.

Advantages
The collapsible door is easy to use and reliable. It is great for security as adding to the fact it is
made from strong and sturdy materials, it also acts as a strong visual deterrent to potential
intruders. The doors are custom made to fit any sizes of openings. The doors are light weight as
compared to solid doors. Easy to install and take down. The doors operate by sliding and are
compressed when fully opened, saving a substantial amount of space for large openings.

Disadvantages
Due to its increased exposed surface area, it collects dust easily and may be harder to operate
over time if its not well maintained. If not operated properly, internal hardware of the door may
get damaged making the door difficult to use. Door needs to be lubricated from time to time. The
collapsible door does not provide privacy and are not suitable to be used in places that are
meant to be air conditioned.

Mk
louvre doors
A louver (American English) or louvre (British English) is a window blind or shutter with horizontal
slats that are angled to admit light and air, but to keep out rain and direct sunshine. The angle of the
[1]
slats may be adjustable, usually in blinds and windows, or fixed.

The History Of Louvre Doors

The word louvre derives itself from the French word ‘louvert’. The word refers to a shutter, blind, or
window that has slats angled horizontally to allow the passage of air and light, which indecently,
protects the room from direct sunlight, and rain.

These shutters were used for the first time ever in the ancient Greece. In the early days, fixed louvres
were made of marble to ensure protection from hostile Mediterranean climate, ventilation, and light
control. This concept became extremely popular and was spread quickly throughout the Mediterranean
region. With changing time, the form of the shutters changed, and wooden movable louvre systems
replaced the fixed type. Rectangular louvred shutters became extremely popular in the Medieval
times, and by the end of 15th century, these louvred doorswere extensively used for its decorative
value. The introduction of these shutters to the New World was triggered with the colonization of
America by the Spanish.

Modern day louvred doors are generally bi-fold, or made up as a combination of two hinged panels.
It is possible to adjust the size of the vents by adjusting the angle of these slats. Bi-fold louvred
doors are generally installed in pairs so that so that each of them can be operated separately. This
helps users to open the whole space of the closet or a small part of it as per requirement. These doors
look much more attractive than ordinary doors and are widely used these days in both residential and
commercial premises. The row of slats found in these doors are called stile, and the smooth frame in
the middle of the slats are known as the rail.

Today, advanced louvered systems, are available in all forms to suit our requirements. Stiles can now
be either fixed or operable types; the operable type of stiles function exactly like window blinds. They
can be adjusted, closed, or opened by hand. However, fixed types louvered shutters are more
commonly used. Depending on the preference of the users, doors can have stiles all along the rails or
on specific parts of the door.

The passage of air into the interior space is increased when the openings between the slats are
expanded. Fully slatted doors are extensively used these days in furnace areas and laundry because
they require the maximum ventilation. Many houses now use large louvred doors covering the
maximum area of the wall for better ventilation. Hollywood sliders are the latest buzz among
homeowners now and have increased more so in recent years. These sliders have no hinged panels,
hence occupying much less space than bi-fold shutters. They move smoothly along a metal track
placed on the frame of the door. White louvred doors and pine louvred doors are two of the most
commonly used varieties of the shutters nowadays.

Preparing these doors require high a degree of precision and thorough knowledge of wood
finishing. Many well known companies that engaged in restoring furniture now provide an excellent
range of louver systems to choose from. We offer a service for restoration of old louvered shutters
which is pretty unique in the UK.

Louvered doors have been used by people for generations because of their utility. Now they have
become a style statement for the households as well as commercial establishments. They are
extremely durable, and remarkably easy to maintain. Modern day louvered systems can be very easily
cleaned, too. Most importantly, these items can last for a lifetime because the restored doors look as if
they were purchased from new.

Pros and cons

As with any design element in your home, there are pros and cons to installing louvered doors for
your closets. Many people like using these doors for their design aesthetics – they have a classic
and unique look. The first advantage when using louvered doors is design – instead of being solid,
the doors use louvers like window shutters. This type of door looks lovely in any home and they
never go out of style.

You can choose between half louvered and full louvered doors. Your choice will depend on your
style. Many see half louvers as more elegant but full louvers offer a more architectural style design.
Another advantage of louvered doors is ventilation.

Louvered doors also give the illusion of extra space in a room. If you have smaller spaces, adding
these doors can bring a new openness to your home. They are also fairly inexpensive, even when
you go with a custom design. This means you can be stylish without having to spend much.

They are versatile enough to fit a variety of door styles, everything from a bi-fold sliding door to an
accordion style door. Louvered doors can be made from a wide range of woods include processed
wood and repurposed wood. Apart from wood, manufacturers also use nylon, PVS and composite
acrylic to make these doors. The doors resemble wood but they are cheap and they can be recycled
easily.

The main disadvantage is maintenance. There are more ridges and hard to reach places on a
louvered door than a flat panel door and this can make cleaning challenging. Certain bendable
feather dusters make daily cleaning much easier but when it’s time for a deep clean be prepared to
spend extra time.

The History Of Sliding Doors

A sliding door is a type of door which opens horizontally by sliding, usually parallel to a wall. Sliding
doors can be mounted either on top of a track below or be suspended from a track above and some
[1]
types 'disappear' in a wall when slid open. There are several types of sliding doors such as pocket
doors, Arcadia doors, and bypass doors. Sliding doors are commonly used as shower doors, glass
doors, screen doors, wardrobe doors or in vans

History of sliding doors

The first automatic sliding doors for use by people were invented in 1954 by Lew Hewitt
and Dee Horton; the first one was installed in 1960. It made use of a mat actuator.
Sliding doors were used as early as the first century CE in Roman houses as evidenced by
[2][3]
archaeological finds in Pompeii, Italy.

are a lot smaller and narrower compared to other sliding doors.

Patio doors
Patio doors have two panels, where one is fixed in place, this is the normal door most people think of as a sliding

space, which makes them great for patios and other open areas. They are perfect to use as a partition between the
living room and the dining room.

Bypass doors
This type of door has two adjacent and fixed panels. They have tracks above and below the door frame. When
