Topic: Routine and Non-Routine Word Problems
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
a. solves routine and non-routine word problems involving multiplication of
whole numbers including money using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools.
b. Follow the steps in solving word problems
Concept Note
(REQUIRED) Identify what is asked- the first step to solve the problem is to identify
what is asked. You should know what is missing or the required in the problem.
(GIVEN)Determine what are given- scan the word problem for the information that
can be useful for to solve what is asked in the problem.
(EQUATION)Construct the expression.- from the given, construct the expression to
solve the required in the problem.
(SOLUTION) Simplify the operation- perform the indicated operation.
(ANSWER) State the answer- the answer must be in accordance to the required in the
problem.
Example (routine)
Lovely saves Php445 every month. If she will continue to save the same amount, how
much will be her savings in 25 months?
Example (non-routine)
Mr. and Mrs. Guido bought notebooks and reams of pad paper for their children. If they
bought 26 notebooks at ₱25 each and 8 reams of pad paper at ₱36 each, how much change would
they get from their ₱1,000 bill?
REQUIRED- how much change would they get from their ₱1,000 bill?
GIVEN - 26 notebooks
₱1000 – ₱938 = n
₱62 = n
