Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
a. solves routine and non-routine word problems involving multiplication of
whole numbers including money using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools.
b. Follow the steps in solving word problems

Activity: Concept note, drill and exercises.

Concept Note

 Routine and non-routine problem solving.

 We can categorize problem solving into two basic types: routine and non-routine. The
purposes and the strategies used for solving problems are different for each type.
 A routine problem is a type of problem which there is an immediate solution
 A non-routine problem is any complex problem that requires some degree of creativity
or originality to solve. Non-routine problems typically do not have an immediately
apparent strategy for solving them. Often times, these problems can be solved in multiple
ways.
Steps in solving word problem.

 (REQUIRED) Identify what is asked- the first step to solve the problem is to identify
what is asked. You should know what is missing or the required in the problem.
 (GIVEN)Determine what are given- scan the word problem for the information that
can be useful for to solve what is asked in the problem.
 (EQUATION)Construct the expression.- from the given, construct the expression to
solve the required in the problem.
 (SOLUTION) Simplify the operation- perform the indicated operation.
 (ANSWER) State the answer- the answer must be in accordance to the required in the
problem.
Example (routine)

Lovely saves Php445 every month. If she will continue to save the same amount, how
much will be her savings in 25 months?

REQUIRED- how much will be her savings in 25 months?

GIVEN - Php445 every month,
25 months
EQUATION - 445 x 25 =
SOLUTION – 445 x 25 = 11,125
ANSWER – Her savings is Php 11, 125 in 25 months.

Example (non-routine)

Mr. and Mrs. Guido bought notebooks and reams of pad paper for their children. If they
bought 26 notebooks at ₱25 each and 8 reams of pad paper at ₱36 each, how much change would
they get from their ₱1,000 bill?

 REQUIRED- how much change would they get from their ₱1,000 bill?
 GIVEN - 26 notebooks

8 reams of pad paper

Cost of a notebook - ₱25 each

Cost of a ream of pad paper - ₱36 each

Amount given to the cashier - ₱1,000 bill

 EQUATION – ₱1000 – (26 x ₱25) + (8 x ₱36) = n

 SOLUTION - ₱1000 – (26 x ₱25) + (8 x ₱36) = n

₱ 1000 – (₱650+ ₱288) = n

₱1000 – ₱938 = n

₱62 = n

 ANSWER – Mr. and Mrs. Guido will get ₱62
