Genetic Disorder Pamphlet

You will be assigned a genetic disorder to research from the list below. Your job is to research

your genetic disorder, so that you can create an information pamphlet. Imagine that you are a

doctor who is creating this pamphlet as a tool for patients to use in order to learn about the

genetic disorder that they have. You may complete the pamphlet on the computer and submit it

via Moodle or you may complete it using paper and pencil. Make sure your work is neat,

informative, and creative. Include all of the following information:

1. Name of the disorder

2. Any other common names?

3. List 5 symptoms

4. How many people are impacted by this disorder? (ex: 1 in 1000)

5. What tests do they use to diagnose this disorder?

6. Is this disorder autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, chromosomal, or sex-linked?

7. Is it possible to treat this disorder?

8. What is the life expectancy for an affected individual?

9. Does it impact a certain population more than others?

10. Are there any well-known people with this disorder? (Celebrities, athletes, etc.)

Here is the list of disorders to choose from: Cystic fibrosis, Sickle-cell anemia, Tay sachs,

Hemochromatosis, Marfan syndrome, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Hemophilia,

Neurofibromatosis type 1, Treacher-Collins syndrome, Maple syrup urine disease, Turner

syndrome

You will give a 5-minute presentation on the last day of class describing your pamphlet.
