CHAPTER – 5

SYMBOLS AND NOTATIONS

The basic approach for the questions of this chapter is 3. Statements: x ÷ y, y – z, z ÷ a
more or less similar to that of coding and decoding. As in
the questions of coding and decoding, a basic word is Conclusions: Ι. x –a
coded in a particular way and the candidate is asked to ΙΙ. z–x
code another word using the same logic.
Sol. By combining the statements, we get x < y ≤ z < a
Similarly in “Symbols and Notations”, one has to study Conclusion Ι: x – a ⇒ x ≤ a does not follow.
the symbols and their meanings carefully which are Conclusion Ι does not follow.
given against them. Then, the meanings given are to be Conclusion ΙΙ: z – x ⇒ z ≤ x does not follow.
used in place of those symbols in answering the Conclusion ΙΙ does not follow
questions. The word “Notation” basically stands for the ∴ Neither Ι nor ΙΙ follows. Choice (D)
meaning which each symbol will be assigned.
4. Statements: e # f, f +g, g ÷ h
Worked out Examples:
Conclusions: Ι. e +g
Directions for questions 1 to 5: These questions are ΙΙ. g +f
based on the following information.
Sol. By combining all the statements, we get
a + b means a is greater than b. e = f > g; g < h
a – b means a is less than or equal to b. Conclusion Ι: e +g ⇒ e > g follows.
a × b means a is greater than or equal to b. Conclusion Ι follows.
a ÷ b means a is less than b. Conclusion ΙΙ: g +f ⇒ g > f does not follow.
a # b means a is equal to b . Conclusion ΙΙ does not follow.
Each of the following questions consists of some ∴ Only Ι follows. Choice (A)
statements followed by two conclusions.
Give your answer as 5. Statements: a + b, c – d, d ÷ b
(A) If only conclusion (Ι) follows.
(B) If only conclusion (ΙΙ) follows. Conclusions: Ι. a +c
(C) If both conclusions (Ι) and (ΙΙ) follow. ΙΙ. c÷b
(D) If neither (Ι) nor (ΙΙ) follows.
Sol. By combining all the statements, we get
1. Statements : m – n, n ÷ o, o # q. a > b, c ≤ b, d < b
⇒a>b>d≥c
Conclusions : Ι: q×m Conclusion Ι: a + c ⇒ a > c follows.
ΙΙ. q+m Conclusion Ι follows.
Conclusion ΙΙ: c ÷ b ⇒ c < b follows.
Sol. The given statements are (i) m ≤ n, n < o and o = q i.e, Conclusions ΙΙ follows.
m≤n<o=q ∴ Both Ι and ΙΙ follow. Choice (C)
Conclusion Ι: q × m ⇒ q ≥ m does not follow.
Hence Ι does not follow. 6. If ‘∆' means ‘is less than’, ‘$’ means 'is greater than’
Conclusion ΙΙ: q + m ⇒ q > m follows. and ‘£’ means ‘is equal to’ and given that a ∆ b, c £ d
Hence only ΙΙ follows. Choice (B) and c $ b, then which of the following is true?
(A) d ∆ a (B) b $ d
2. Statements : l ÷ m, o # q, m + o (C) a £ c (D) a ∆ b ∆ c

Conclusions : Ι: m+q Sol. a ∆ b ⇒ a < b

ΙΙ: l×o c$b⇒c>b⇒b<c
c£d⇒c=d
Sol. The given statements are Ι < m, o = q and m > o ∴a<b<c=d
i.e, m > l, m > o = q (A) d ∆ a ⇒ d < a → does not follow
Conclusion Ι: m +q ⇒ m > q follows. (B) b $ d ⇒ b > d → does not follow
Conclusion ΙΙ: l × o ⇒ l ≥ o does not follow. (C) a £ c ⇒ a = c → does not follow
∴ Only conclusion Ι follows Choice (A) (D) a ∆ b ∆ c ⇒ a < b < c → follows
Choice (D)
