Reported Speech Text: Johnny Depp v.

Amber Heard
In this text, I will talk about the famous case of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. A popular
case and very well known to everyone since it had a great impact in 2022.
The trial was held in Fairfax County, Virginia, from April 11 to June 1, 2022, and ruled on
allegations of defamation between formerly married American actors Johnny Depp and
Amber Heard.
I will be saying what was said during the trial, in this case, we are going to focus on the
staircase incident.
In this situation were involucrated Johnny, Amber, and Amber’s sister Whitney.
Johnny and Amber were discussing when Amber’s sister interposed between them.
Amber said that Whitney had been trying to stop Johnny, her back had been to the staircase
and Johnny had been swinging at her, which made Amber think about the rumor that Johnny
Depp shoved Kate Moss down a flight of stairs.
Originally the trial wouldn’t have Kate Moss’s testimony, but everything changed when
Amber Heard mentioned her. Heard’s mention of Moss gave Depp’s lawyers an opening to
bring Moss in as a rebuttal witness.
Kate Moss in her testimony said that she never had been pushed, kicked, or thrown down
any stairs by Johnny. She said that during their vacation to Jamaica had been a rainstorm as
she had left the room, she had slid down the stairs and had hurt her back. She also said
Johnny had come running back to help her had carried her to her room and had gotten her
medical attention.
In this case, the verdict was in favor of Johnny Depp. Amber Heard had to pay 15 million
dollars to him for defaming the actor in a column in The Washington Post, where she
presented herself as a victim of domestic abuse. The jury awarded Depp $10 million in
compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard was awarded US$2
million in compensatory damages and no punitive damages.
