Connecting the ISDN OfficeConnect Lan Modem (OCLM)

Figure 1

The diagram above (figure 1) shows the physical connection of the OCLM.

Connect an Ethernet Cable (straight) supplied in the box as a white cable between the RJ45
Network port of the Workstation and one of the four RJ45 Lan Ports of the OCLM.

Connect the ISDN Cable supplied in the box as a flat grey cable with RJ45 connectors between
the ISDN port ( RJ45 ) and your Telephone providers ISDN socket ( RJ45 ).

Connect the Power Adaptor cable to the OCLM and the power adaptor to the Electricity mains
supply and switch on.

The next step will configure the TCP/IP parameters of your workstation.

Before commencing the following sections you will need the following information :

1. Internet Service Provider Telephone Number

2. The Username and Password to connect to the Internet Service Provider
3. The Internet Service Providers’ DNS Server IP Addresses

Manually Assigning an IP Address
To assign an IP address manually follow the steps below
To enter an IP address manually you must assign an IP address within the same subnet (e.g.
192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.30). When specifying an IP address the PC’s default gateway should
be the address of the OCLM and the ISP’s DNS servers IP addresses should be entered in the
DNS tab of the PC’s TCP/IP properties as shown below. Please note the DNS entries below are
examples only, you will need to contact your ISP to obtain the IP addresses of their DNS
servers. (see figure 6)

Configuring the ISP Parameters
Enter the name, telephone number (including any prefix digits needed to obtain an outside line)
the username and password for the relevant account and the DNS IP Addresses of the ISP’s
DNS servers (All this information is provided by your Internet Service Provider) see figure 13.

Figure 13

Bandwidth Allocation (see figure 14)

Select “Use One B Channel” from Bandwidth Allocation
(Bandwidth on demand (Add second B channel as required) or 128K (Use two B channels) can
be used once the connection has been tested)

Callback Parameters (see figure 14)

If your ISP calls you back, check the “Enable Callback” check box, followed by details
of the number to callback, the username and password

Miscellaneous (see figure 14)

For Europe select the B channel rate as 64Kb/s, For the USA select 56Kb/s, and select “NO”
for Use Data Compression

Select “YES” for using Network Address Translation (NAT), for further information on NAT
please refer to page A5 of the LAN Modem user guide.

WAN link IP address and WAN link subnet mask should both be left blank. (this would only
be used on a LAN to LAN configuration using Numbered Links)

Allow Automatic Call Initiation should be set to “NO”.

If set to “YES”, calls will be made automatically once a request is made from a PC on the LAN;
if this setting is required the line should be monitored once the unit is up and running to ensure
that no unwanted calls are being made from the network.

To check that the network behind the OCLM is not initiating unwanted calls physically check that
neither of the B channel LED’s on the front of the OCLM are lit (see figure 15) and verify the
“Reason for Calling up” within the Call Statistics screen (see figure 18).

Figure 15

By allowing this feature you may be allowing unintended calls to be made by other devices on
the LAN. Information on unwanted calls can also be found by going to the 3Com
Knowledgebase (http://knowledgebase.3com.com) and performing a search on the Solution ID
112.0.2172986.1587738.

Click on the “SUBMIT” button to save the parameters

Testing the Connection

Choose Manual Calling from the left hand menu then click on “PLACE CALL” next to the
Internet Service Providers’ name. (see figure 16)

Figure 16

Verify the LED’s on the front of the OCLM. The ISDN OK led will flash green if an ISDN cable is
attached, and will change to solid green once a call has been successfully established to the
ISP.
The B channel LED’s B1 and B2 represent the two ISDN 64K channels, when a call is in
progress the respective LED will flash green as the call is negotiated then remain solid green
once the call is successfully established to the ISP.
The connection can now be tested by opening a web page.
If opening a web page fails try Pinging the IP address of a website e.g http://www.3com.com/
(192.136.32.249) noting that the first attempt may time out as the negotiation of the line will take
a few seconds. (see figure 17)

followed by current call (see figure 18)
