PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONCEPT

INTRODUCTION

Modern technology has lessened the physical demands of everyday

activities like cleaning the house, washing the dishes and
clothes, carrying pail water, scrubbing the floor and the like.
These activities demand time to be accomplished. Chores that
once required long hours of physical activities, can now be
accomplished in just a few seconds by simply pushing the buttons
or setting the dial. As a result, more free time is utilized
for other activities. Unfortunately, many individuals have
acquired a sedentary or inactive lifestyle leading to some
diseases like hypertension, Musculo-skeletal disorders such as
osteoporosis and obesity.

To promote a healthy lifestyle among individual, the DepEd and

CHED emphasize physical education from pre-school, elementary,
secondary, and tertiary levels. The course promotes the
utilization of the learning medium of large muscle activities
through play or movement exploration setting such organized
sports, gymnastics, dance, aquatics and calisthenics. Physical
education aims to develop students’ skills and good habits and
to assists them into becoming skilled, smart, happy, competent
and intelligent individuals.

Physical Education refers to the enhancement of the individual’s

growth and development through total body movements. Physical
Education activities teach students to work as part of a team
or as an individual in a wide variety of play-like and
competitive activities. In general, Physical Education is
teaching proper body movement to develop the physical, mental,
emotional, and social aspects of an individual through selected
physical activities.

Meaning of Physical Education

Physical Education came from the Latin words “physica”, which

means physics and “education”, which means the training of the
bodily organs and power with a view to the promotion of the
hearts and vigor (Wikipedia, 2004).

Physical Education is an integral part of the educational

program designed to promote the optimum development of an
individual physically, mentally, socially and emotionally
through total body movement in the performance of properly
selected physical activities (Andin, 1998)

Objectives of Physical Education

Physical Education as part of the educational system strives to

help or facilitate the development of the potentialities of the
individual so that he/she can attain total fitness that enables
him/her to enjoy a good and useful life.
The objectives of physical education are focused on the
acquisition of those skills through the following aspect of
development: a) physical; b) mental; c) emotional and d)
social.

A. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Focus is on acquisition and development of physical
skills which can increase one’s capability to enjoy
lifetime recreational pursuits. This is attained
through regular exercise and participation in varied
vigorous activities

B. MENTAL DEVELOPMENT
Through physical education activities, learners
acquire knowledge and understanding of rules and
strategies of the games, sports and dance
instructions. Varied activities to analyse body
movements, skills and games situations.

C. EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Physical Education activities provide opportunities
for self-expression and emotional mastery. People who
have more positive feeling about physical activities
are said to have more positive balance of feelings
which increase and develop self-confidence, self-
reliance and self-control.

D. SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Physical Activity often promotes the opportunity to
be with other people. Through social experience, many
appreciate the importance of physical education.

DEFINITION OF ACTIVE LIVING

Active living can be defined in many different ways. Here are

three definitions:
1. Active living can be defined as a way of life which values
physical activity and integrates it into everyday life.

2. Active Living is a way of life where people choose to be

physically active every day in their community; whether
they are at school, at work, at home, or at play. Active
Living is based on the belief that regular physical
activity has many lifelong benefits.

3. Some definitions of active living include other types of

activities besides physical ones. They value physical,
social, mental, emotional and spiritual activities, which
are also integrated into daily living.

CHOOSING TO BE ACTIVE
There are many factors that may affect someone’s decision to
become physically active. Some factors may include the health
and fitness benefits of being physically active, personal
experiences, interests, abilities, financial, safety issues,
and personal circumstances. We will spend some time looking at
each of these factors

EXPERIENCES
An individual’s past experiences will play a factor in their
choice to live an active lifestyle. If a person has had positive
experiences being physically active, they are more likely to
want to be physically active again. For example, if going for a
walk after a stressful day makes you feel better you may choose
to do it the following day. Negative experiences with physical
activity sometimes has the opposite effect and individuals may
not want to do it again. Having positive experiences with
activity is a very powerful factor in future activity
participation

INTEREST
An individual’s personal interests will play a significant
factor in becoming physically active.

ABILITIES
Physical abilities may include how developed your movement and
sport skills may be. If you feel that you can easily run, hop,
throw, catch, balance, etc., you will find it enjoyable to take
part in physical activities. If you do not feel confident or
competent with these skills then you may not want to risk
embarrassment or injury by taking part in activities that
challenge those skills or abilities. It is important to remember
that movement and sport skills improve the more you practice
them.
TECHNOLOGY
Think of ways technology can affect active living in a positive
and negative manner. Machines and automation reduce energy
expenditures, cause sedentary living, and decrease caloric
expenditures which may in turn contribute to your weight gain.
On the other hand, there are new technologies that help people
achieve their fitness goals. Keep this in mind when you are
developing your plan to be active. How can you use technology
to help you be more active? How can you reduce the use of
technology to be more active?
