Strategic Risk Management Examination Report

June 2021

Course Leader’s Report

Question 1: Most students were able to identify the required number of risks and provide risk
responses as well as the assessment of risk magnitude. Limitations were mostly surrounding the
discussion of the wider risk attitude or the neglect of detailing the risk magnitude. Better performing
students matched risk and response very well while also providing some rationale for the
magnitude.

Question 2: Generally, students covered the concept of risk attitude reasonably well and were able
to establish the past risk attitude. However, recommendations for the future regarding risk attitudes
often were not appropriate and support from literature was mostly missing in less accomplished
answers.

Question 3: Most students were able to adequately detail the 10-step process of scenario planning.
Limitations mostly stemmed from failing to over insights in step 8, 9, 10 or the choice of primary
question which often did not incorporate measurable criteria.

Question 4: This question was generally answered reasonably well. Most students managed to
identify the individual risks and their connections, but less well-developed answers did not
incorporate those risks into a RIF nor did discuss or display the links based on magnitude within the
RIF.

Marks were also deducted for lack of references and drawing examples solely from the case study
itself and exceeding the allowed word limit. Extra marks were awarded for further research and
appropriate reflection, relevant illustrations and original examples.
