ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to convey my gratitude to Mrs.
Shweta Sharma for her tremendous support
and assistance in the completion of my
project. I would also like to thank our
Principal, Mrs. Neelam Shukla, for providing
me with this wonderful opportunity to work on
a project with the topic to compare the ph of
different kinds of soil. The completion of the
project would not have been possible without
the help of my parents.
Bonafide Certificate
This is to inform you that Yash Gupta is
a bonafied student of class XII A1 of
Rani Laxmi Bai Memorial School.

CHEMISTRY
PROJECT
TOPIC-
TO COMPARE THE
PH OF DIFFERENT
TYPES OF SOIL.
Soil
Soil are a complex combination of organic
matter , minerals , organism & liquid that
altogether support our life. Earth’s body of soil
is called the Pedosphere, which has four
important function:
 It is medium for plant growth.
 Stores water supplies and purifies it.
 It is a modifier of earth’s atmosphere.
Definition of Ph
pH is defined as the negative logarithm of H+ ion
concentration. Hence the meaning of the name pH
is justified as the power of hydrogen.
Ph scale
The concentration of hydronium ion is conveniently
expressed on a logarithmic scale. This scale is known
as pH scale. pH of acids and bases is defined as the
negative logarithm (with base 10) of activity of
hydrogen ion (H+).

pH measurement
The pH of a solution varies from 0 to 14.

 For acidic solution: [H3O+] > [OH–]

 For neutral solution: [H3O+] = [OH–]
 For basic solution: [H3O+] < [OH–]
pH = -log [H+]
Aim
1) To study the texture of the soil samples.
2) To study the moisture content of soil samples.
3) To study capacity of holding water of soil samples.
4) To study the sample of PH of the soil sample.
Apparatus Required
1) Dropper
2) Beaker
3) Tile
4) Measuring cylinder
5) Filter paper
6) Ph paper booklet
7) Test tube
8) Distilled water
9) Funnel
10) Universal ph indicator
11) Wire gauze
12) Burner
13) Crucibles
14) Weighing scale
15) Mortar and pestle
16) Petri dish
17) Glass rods
18) Tin box with perforated bottom

Procedure
The following are the steps taken to prepare the soil
samples for experiments to analyse various properties.

To study the Texture of soil samples

 Collect 50gm of soil in a cylinder.
 Pour little water into the cylinder and shake.
 Wait for the particle to settle down.
 The particle in the measuring cylinder will
start settling down in layer record the
thickness these layers.

To study the moisture content of the

Soil Samples
 Put the two samples of soil in different crucibles.
 Weight the sample using weighing balance.
 Place the crucible over Bunsen burner and heat it
until it becomes dry.
 Weight the crucible and record the weight of the dry
sample.
 Samples are now ready to determine the moisture
content of the soil.

To study the ph of the

Soil sample
Take roadside soil and put it into beaker
containing water. Repeat the process for other
soil samples.
Take the test and pour the soil solution
separately through filter paper using a funnel.
Collected filtrates in the test tube are ready for
ph testing.
Put a few drops of universal indicator solution
using a dropper to the test tube.
Observation
S.Rno Soil sample Ph value

1) Plant soil 6.5

2) Garden soil 7.5

3) Pond soil 8.5

4) Roadside soil 9.0
