Noise reduction is the process of removing noise from a signal.
Noise can be defined as
any unwanted sound or signal that interferes with the desired signal. Noise reduction techniques exist for audio, images, and video signals.
There are many different ways to reduce noise. Some common methods include:
Filtering: Filtering can be used to remove noise from a signal by selectively
attenuating certain frequency bands. For example, a low-pass filter can be used to remove high-frequency noise, such as hiss, from an audio signal. Masking: Masking is a technique that takes advantage of the human auditory system's inability to hear two sounds at the same time. By adding a masking signal that is similar in frequency and amplitude to the noise, the noise can be made inaudible. Noise cancellation: Noise cancellation is a technique that uses two signals to cancel out each other. One signal is the original signal that contains the noise, and the other signal is a reference signal that is identical to the noise except for its phase. By adding the two signals together, the noise can be canceled out.
