DEAD WHALE
GREENPEACE PH & BIBOY ROYONG
SUBJECT
(GUIDE QUESTIONS: WHAT DO YOU SEE? WHAT ARE THE MATERIALS USED?
WHERE IS THE ARTWORK LOCATED? ANSWER IN 3-4 SENTENCES ONLY)
The artwork Dead Whale is all about to represent the cases of plastic
pollution in bodies of water. Therefore, the artist used a dead whale
strangled by trash to highlight the immense plastic pollution problem in
the ocean, especially that the Philippines ranked third in the list of
countries with the most plastic wastes going into the oceans at this
time. This also calls on the ASEAN to address this growing catastrophe on
its borders. The message it tries to convey is that plastic pollution is a
deadly manufactured problem that endangers even the most important
marine species and raises awareness about the dangers of dumping
plastics into bodies of water.
CONTEXT
(GUIDE QUESTION: WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND OF THE ARTIST/S? WHAT ARE THE
INFLUENCES/INSPIRATIONS OF THE ARTWORK? ANSWER IN 3-4 SENTENCES ONLY)
While the first installation of this artwork was based on the tragic
incident in Davao del Norte that washed up the beach with 88 pounds of
plastic in her stomach. The second one is a timely response to the story
of a male Cuvier's beaked whale that was found dead on the shores of
Mabini, Compostela Valley. There was also a pregnant dead whale that
washed up on an Italian beach with nearly 50 pounds of plastic in her
stomach and all of these served as inspiration for the artwork “Dead
Whale”. To illustrate the tragic effects of human plastic consumption, he
installed this piece, which he called "the Cry of the Dead Whale.”
THEME
(GUIDE QUESTIONS: WHAT CONNECTS TO THE SUBJECTS TO THEIR SOCIAL
MILIEU OR TO THE LARGER CONTEXTS?)
The theme of the artwork is plastic pollution and protection of the marine
environment and biodiversity.
wHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT
THE ARTWORK?
The Dead Whale by Greenpeace PH and Biboy Royoung clearly shows the
serious and harmful effects of water pollution in the marine ecosystem.
This installation art did not just showcase the creativity of Filipino
artists but also became an instrument in informing and raising awareness
about the serious and negative effects of water pollution. Although the
subject of the installation art was very simple, the message or content
that it partakes to the audience is very impactful and moving. As high
school students and part of the future generation, the installation art
would encourage and inspire many to take part in preserving our marine
ecosystem.

THEME
(GUIDE QUESTIONS: WHAT CONNECTS TO THE SUBJECTS TO THEIR SOCIAL
MILIEU OR TO THE LARGER CONTEXTS?)
The theme of the artwork is the sacrifice and love of Front liners and the
unceasing battering from a virus and an inept government.
wHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT
THE ARTWORK?
The COVID-19 pandemic has put millions of people from all over the world to
a stop due to the strict implementation of healthcare protocols and
restrictions. However, despite the threat of the disease, healthcare
workers were put in the front line to battle an invisible enemy. The
services and sacrifices given by healthcare workers is undeniably
commendable and will always be something that we, as normal citizens,
should remember, cherish and be grateful for. This installation art will
always serve as a reminder for us to be grateful to all healthcare workers
and frontliners for continuously doing their best in serving the country.

BAKWIT
ARCHIE OCLOS
SUBJECT
(GUIDE QUESTIONS: WHAT DO YOU SEE? WHAT ARE THE MATERIALS USED?
WHERE IS THE ARTWORK LOCATED? ANSWER IN 3-4 SENTENCES ONLY)
"Bakwit" by Archie Oclos is a mixed media piece that mixes spray paint and
acrylic on canvas. The artwork depicts an older brother carrying her
younger brother to cross over a land of water after, as it seems, since
they are carrying their things, they have been displaced from their homes
due to conflict. The combination of black and white with traces of yellow
adds a sense of urgency and danger to the scenario, focusing on the
harsh reality faced by those forced to flee their homes towards a
graduation hat shaped clouds. The artwork is placed on the College of St.
Benilde as the artist sees the location as a good platform to tell the
narratives of our youth in the mountains.
CONTENT
(GUIDE QUESTIONS: WHAT IS THE ARTWORK ALL ABOUT? WHAT IS THE MESSAGE
IT'S TRYING TO CONVEY? ANSWER IN 3-4 SENTENCES ONLY)
The artwork is about the Bakwit (evacuees) siblings who are trying to
survive during the times of militarization, and the older child carrying his
younger brother symbolizes protection of the younger generation and
shines a light on the predicament of the country's indigenous people. It
tells the narrative of the Lumad kids whose parents were killed, and had
to quit their schools and leave their towns. The artwork conveys the
indigenous peoples' challenges, particularly the youth, during periods of
abandonment, aerial bombing, persecution, and killings in their community.
However, this is also considered a tactic to disrupt and derail government
interventions and development programs in the IP communities.

THEME
(GUIDE QUESTIONS: WHAT CONNECTS TO THE SUBJECTS TO THEIR SOCIAL
MILIEU OR TO THE LARGER CONTEXTS?)
The theme of the artwork is war and militarization in the Philippines and
the struggles of the indigenous people because of it.
wHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT
THE ARTWORK?
From the meaning of the word “Bakwit” itself, the painting depicts the
life of evacuees. The mural gives the people an idea on how difficult it is
to live in their own community due to militarization which hinders the
community from having a safe space to live. For the sake of attaining
freedom and safety, most indigenous have to evacuate their own
community. Behind every Bakwit’s story is a trauma that they all wanted
to forget.
