Introduction to ZTE ZXSDR
The Software Defined Radio Base Stations (SDR) adopt innovative distributed
structure, unified MicroTCA platform, and multicarrier technologies to
significantly boost system integration and efficiency, as well as network
convergence and evolution capabilities. ZXSDR series base stations support
multimode, multiband wireless operation through software configuration.
Allows powerful evolution to LTE.

It consists of two parts: BBU and RRU/RSU, which can be used either indoors
or outdoors. Such distributed base station architecture allows flexible site
selection, zero footprint, extended coverage, and baseband pool in
hightraffic scenarios.

ZXSDR BS8700/BS8900 allows dual mode GSM+

UMTS service deployment

n Cabling Principles

l If the equipment room is equipped with racks and antistatic floorboards,

use downward cabling mode. If upward cabling mode is used, need to
install a cabling rack/cabling ladder at the upper part of the cabinet and
route the cables in the cabling rack.
l Cabling position should be designed in advance. The cables should be
arranged orderly, and their skin should not be damaged.
l External cables include power cables, tail fibers, trunk cables, and other
signal cables. Cables in the cabling rack should be categorized and
bundled, should not be crossed each other. Cables should be fixed by
cable ties. Bundling interval should be 20 cm.
l Bending position of each cable should be even and smooth. The
minimum bending radius = 60 mm.
l Cables should be bundled orderly and straightly. Cable ties should be
distributed at regular intervals, and tightened moderately.

© 2006, ZTE Corporation. All rights reserved.

l Cables in a cabling trough may not be bundled. Cables in a cabling
trough should be straight, not cross each other, and not overflow the
trough. Cables should be bundled at the entrance and exit of the cabling
trough and at the turning positions.
l Trunk cables routed from the cabinet to the cable terminal rack should
not be strained. Redundant cables should not be cut. In a cabling trough
or in a movable floor, cables leading to different cabinets should be
bundled separately from eachother. Cables should be straight and
ordered, not cross each other. Their skin should not be damaged. If
necessary, reserve additional length for the cables.
l Cable should be affixed with corresponding labels. Every label should be
affixed 2 cm away from one end of the cable. Label indicates the
destinations of both ends: cabinet number plus slot number plus socket
number.
l The cables should be routed to facilitate maintenance and future
expansion capacity.

Installation Care
In order to prevent damages to fiber core, special cares must be paid to
Optical Fiber installation:

l Don’t step on the fibers of let heavy materials lay over them.
l Don’t bend the fibers forming angles, respect the minimum bending radius
l Don’t force connectors through passtrough engineering holes. Remove the hole
cap, lay the cables, cut the appropriate holes with side cuts to pass the cables and
reinstall the cap in the engineering hole. Use always outtern holes for the fibers
l Don’t force connectors into position by pressing from the cable surface.
l Don’t stress fibers with plastic straps, clamps or tools.
l Don’t cut the sheat of fibers

Antenna Installation
Parameters
n Height
The installation height of antenna on the tower is
determined by network planning design.
n Azimuth
The azimuth/bearing of the antenna is determined by
network planning design.
n Downtilt/Uptilt
The downtilt angle of the antenna is determined by
network planning design. Usually the mechanical
down tilt angle is 0°~10°adjustementprovided by
Fastener B. Aditional downtilt is provided trough
electric downtilt mechanism from 0°to 8°
n Direction
Antenna direction depends on the antenna azimuth. If
two antennas in same sector, must share the same
azimuth.

Installation
•The antenna installation position must be in accordance
with project design
•The antenna should be hoisted according to same
safety standards as RRU
•The antenna installation position needs to take
care for lightning protection. If thunders storm days≥20
per year or mountain environment, protection angle
should be 30º. Otherwise 45º are recommended

1. Lighting rod 3. Antenna

2. 45~30°Lightning protection area 4. Grounding cable

•Antenna isolation
The antenna installation position must keep vertical and horizontal separation
from other antennas in order to prevent interference

d≥0.7 m between UMTS and d≥1.4 m between UMTS and

GSM850/1900 or DAMPS GSM850/1900 or DAMPS antennas.

3GPP criterion regarding GSM&WCDMA cosite interference, is focused mainly
to avoid the block interference, according to the equipment performance and
actual experience, the isolation dB and distance is defined as follows:

Parameter\Band GSM1900 & WCDMA850 DCS1800 & WCDMA850

isolation (dB) 43 33

vertical distance(M) 0.7m 0.5m

horizontal distance 1.4m 1m

Because WIMAX 3.5G and WCDMA 850M are at different frequency bands, so
we don’t need to consider the isolation between them.

•Fix the antena to the poles, and adjust mechanical downtilt to meet engineering
design. Default is 0.
•NOTE: Leave space for the electric downtilt adjustment mechanism below the
antenna.

Pilot Pollution: An Issue to Consider When Installing UMTS
Antennas

UMTS ‘breathing cell’ nature requires

dynamic adjustment of cell footprint. This
doesn’t happens in the GSM ‘static cell’.
The effect of the rear and side lobes are
critical when deploying UMTS networks.

The parabolic reflector inside the body

of the antenna minimizes but doesn’t
eliminates the rear and side lobes of
the antenna beam. It is estimated an
effective range of 50 cm to the back
and back sides of the antenna.
© 2006, ZTE Corporation. All rights reserved.
n On UMTS and other CDMA networks a Common Pilot Signal Channel
(CPICH) is used to estimate the quality of the channel, cell selection and
handover. This is not necessary on GSM networks.
n The power of the CPICH signal defines the cell coverage and has a direct
impact on the cell capacity and the quality of the service.
n Usual CPICH signal power is between 30 and 33dBm and its dinamically
adjusted by the node B according to the quantity of subscribers attached to
the cell. It will decrease power as more subscribers get connected to the cell.
n Subscribers are virtually attached to a channel. Several node B can overlap a
point with the same channel to make possible the softhandoff of the
subscribers when moving from one cell to another. Subscribers remain on
the same channel when moves from one cell to another.
n When located on the overlapped area, a subscriber may be connected to
several cells simultaneously.
n Receiving Equal power CPICH signals or multiple strong CPICH signals with
its multipath components form cells that doesn’t belong to the current Active
Set causes Pilot Pollution
n On Pilot polluted environments, signaling power consumption increases,
reducing the power available for subcribers’ traffic; the call establishing
process is affected and also the degradation of the quality of the signal is
noticeable, the pilot pollution degrades the Frame Error Rate (FER) and Bit
Error rate (BER) increasing the number of terminated calls.
n Exposing the jumper of the UMTS antenna to the rear lobe of ayn antenna
may increase the pilot signal power, generating pilot pollution.

Waterproof Treatment for Cables & Connectors
l Seal the jumper connector at RRU, antenna port connector, Monitoring
cable port connector at RRU and Power port connector at RRU for
waterproof treatment. 1 layer of vinyl electrical tape 3 layers of
waterproof nylon adhesive tape (mastic tape)– 3 layers of PVC insulating
tape.
n Wrap the waterproof adhesive tapes to lower side of connectors. Keep
wrapping direction same as the one that the jumper is tightened.
n While wrapping, extend the adhesive tapes to double their length. Note that
every wrapping layer must be overlapped the previous layer by half the width
of the tape Wrapping must be extended up to 50 mm (2 inches) away from
jumper connector position.

n Grip the tape with the hands to make the tape tightly adhered and
prevent air bubbles
n Wrap PVC tapes on top of the waterproof adhesive tape. During the
process, make sure the upper layer overlaps the lower layer by half
the width of the tape
l Seal the optical fiber connector of RRU, RET/ASIG port connector
