The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was established on

December 8, 1985. It is an intergovernmental organization comprising eight countries:


Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. SAARC
promotes regional cooperation in various fields such as trade, economy, culture, and
people-to-people exchanges.

SAPTA (South Asian Preferential Trade Agreement) was signed on April 11, 1993, and
later transformed into SAFTA (South Asian Free Trade Agreement) on January 1, 2006.
SAFTA is a regional trade agreement among the member countries of SAARC (South
Asian Association for Regional Cooperation). It aims to promote economic integration
and boost intra-regional trade by reducing tariffs and non-tariff barriers. SAFTA member
countries include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and
Sri Lanka.
