Intro to Human Biology
READING
The Physical development of humans begins at conception. During the prenatal
stage, a human grows from a single cell into a baby. This stage involves many
major physical changes. When a person is born, he or she enters infancy.
This covers a person’s first year of life. During infancy, a person begins to develop
motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
After about a year, an infant usually learns how to walk. This is when the child is
considered a toddler. Toddlerhood last a few years, as the child develops
coordination and motor skills. These continue to develop throughout early
childhood.
The next major stage of human development occurs between ages ten and
twelve. Around this time, puberty begins. A person is now able to reproduce, but is
still not yet fully developed.
Growth continues during the next few years, known as adolescence. In his or her
late teens, and adolescent reaches adulthood. At this point, the individual is
physically mature. In general, adulthood is the longest period of a person’s life.
The stage of adulthood after about forty-five is called middle age.
Finally, old age is the last stage in a person’s life.

A. Before you read the passage, talk about these questions

1. What are the stages of a child’s physical develpment?

A human passes through many stages during his or her physical
development. The first stages occur during the prenatal period of the
person’s life. During this time, the person grows from a single cell into a
baby. After birth, a person passes through the stages that make up a
person’s childhood. This include infancy, toddlerhood, and early childhood.
Eventually, a human reaches adolescence and puberty, and then finally
adulthood.
2. What is the importance of hand-eye coordination?

Hand-eye coordination is the control of the link between visual stimuli and hand
movements. Whenever a person performs an activity that involves both looking
at something and physically interacting with the hands, he or she is using this
ability. Hand-eye coordination is involved with innumerable everyday task.
Writing, driving, and using a computer are just a few examples of common
activities requiring effective hand-eye coordination.
