RED EYE

RED EYE
Red eye is a common symptom which can be due to many
conditions
Caused by enlarged, dilated blood vessels, leading to the
appearance of redness on surface of eye
Red eye can be 1.painful red eye
2.painless red eye
Causes of painful red eye
Acute angle closure glaucoma—RAPID INCREASE IN INTRAOCKLAR
PRESSURE DUETO SUDDEN BLOCKAGE OF ADLEOUS HUMOR

Anterior uveitis—it is inflammation of the uveal tissue from iris up to


pars Pulicata of ciliary body
Acute keratitis—it is inflammation of cornea which is characterised
by corneal oedema,cellular infiltration and ciliary congestion
Bacterial keratitis-having bac corneal oval ulcer due to
staphy ,strepto and bac corneal ring shaped ulcer due to gram -ve
bacteria
Mycotic keratitis-by aspergillus fumigatus,candida
Viral keratitis—herpes simplex keratitis (most common), herpes
zoster ophthalmicus and adenovirus keratitis.
Protozoan keratitis-by acanthameba
Scleritis—Scleritis refers to an inflammation of the sclera
proper. It may cause severe visual impairment and even
loss of the eye if not treated
Injuries to conjunctiva,cornea,and Foreign body in eye
Causes of painless red eye
Episcleritis—Episcleritis is benign, recurrent, inflammation of
the episclera, involving the overlying Tenon's capsule but not
the underlying sclera.
It is of diffuse and nodular type
Conjunctivitis—inflammation of conjunctiva
It is seen in bacterial conjunctivitis-DD by purulent discharge
In viral conjunctivitis-DD by watery discharge
In allergic conjunctivitis-DD by ropy discharge
In chlamydial conjunctivitis
Acute endopthalmitis—it is defined as an inflammation of the
inner structures of the eyeball, i.e. uveal tissue and retina
associated with pouring of exudates in the vitreous cavity,
anterior chamber and posterior chamber.
