MARKING SCHEME – PAPER 1

DRAWING OR PAINTING FROM OBSERVATION

Paper 1a: Still life


The candidate is assessed on his/her ability to record observations and to organize these
observations into a coherent whole. The candidate is expected to handle media well and
to be able to render effectively the different surface textures in the group of objects. The
work should record the appearance and qualities of the objects, paying attention to scale
and the arrangement of the recorded objects on the sheet of paper. The candidate is
expected to be able to use media in a way that suits his/her intentions.

Paper 1b: The Human Figure


The candidate is assessed on his/her ability to render the structure of the human figure
effectively and to record the posture of the model. The candidate is expected to be able
to use media in a way that suits his/her intentions.

COMPOSITION FROM A THEME

Paper 2A
The candidate should treat the selected title as a stimulus that can be developed
imaginatively. The work produced during the examination should show that the
candidate has researched and investigated the theme and was able to develop and refine
this preparatory research into a single work that presents a personal and relevant response
to the title. The candidate is expected to be able to use media in a way that suits his/her
intentions.

Paper 2B
The candidate should treat the selected title as a stimulus that can be developed
imaginatively. The work produced during the examination should show that the
