AIMS: A1: to compare Past Perfect Simple and Past Perfect Continuous according to their
use, form and emphasis.
A2: to make sentences using Past Perfect Simple and Past Perfect Continuous, by
decoding QR codes
A3: to describe five newspaper headlines using sentences with verbs in the Past
Perfect Simple and Past Perfect Continuous
A4: to complete sentences with the right tense (Past Perfect Simple and Past Perfect
Continuous

ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS: The Ss. might find difficult to make the difference between
Past Perfect Simple and Past Perfect Continuous. The teacher
will provide more examples or information if needed.
Warm - up: (5 minutes)

After checking their homework, the students are asked to answer the following
question : "What words come to your mind when you hear the word PAST?". They need to
provide 3 answers for this question, using the Mentimeter app. - Word cloud. The teacher
reads their answers and briefly discuss about them with the students.

A1: to compare Past Perfect Simple and Past Perfect Continuous according to their
use, form and emphasis.

TIME: 12 minutes

CONTEXT: Past Perfect Simple and Past Perfect Continuous

ACTIVITY: First, the teacher announces the topic of the lesson (Past Perfect Simple and Past
Perfect Continuous), then the students are shown a video with a short
comparison between the two tenses ( page 49 from their books). After watching
the video, the teacher shows them two sentences: " Dad had painted the fence
in the garden." and" Dad had been painting the fence in the garden when
the roof of our house fell in." They will have to mention what is the difference
between them (the first one is in the Past Perfect Simple and the second one is in
the Past Perfect Continuous). The teacher provides them a worksheet, which they
have to complete by mentioning the difference between the two tenses in terms
of use, form and emphasis (see worksheet).

CONTEXT: QR codes

ACTIVITY: The teacher announces the students that they are going to use their mobile
phones in order to decode seven QR codes. The codes include clues that will
help the students to make sentences with verbs in the Past Perfect Simple and
Past Perfect Continuous (see power point presentation). The sentences are:
1. I had been working hard all day.
2. They had been playing football.
3. I had been looking forward to it.
4. He had been watching a film.
5. We had been playing for half an hour when it started to rain.
6. We had known each other for years.
7. She had been running.

A3: to describe five newspaper headlines using sentences with verbs in the Past Perfect
Simple and Past Perfect Continuous

TIME: 9 minutes

CONTEXT: Newspaper headlines

ACTIVITY: The Ss. are shown five newspaper headlines with pictures (see power point
presentation). They have to read each newspaper headline, look at the picture
and guess what the article is about based only on the headline and the picture
shown. Then, they need to make sentences with Past Perfect Simple and Past
Perfect Continuous to describe the action/event presented in each article. The
newspaper headlines are: 1. " Anti-bullying team celebrates victory.",
2."Go...if you must!", 3."I've won the sun 1 million pounds", 4. "Gaming
addict kids taken into care" and 5. " Brave heart". Possible answers:

1. She had been a victim of cyber-bullying.


She had been bullied for a long period of time.
Campaigners had been battling to stop cyber-bullying.

2. Harry and Meghan had been asking permission to the Queen to live in Canada too.
The Queen preferred that Harry and Meghan had stayed as full-time royals.
3. He won one million pounds because he had bought the Sun newspaper.
He had been lying in his bed when he found out that he had won one million pounds.

4. The kids had been playing games too much.


The kids had become addicted to gaming.

5. She won a gold medal even though she had been injured during the competition.
She had been practicing gymnastics with her coach, Bela Karolyi.

CONTEXT: Kahoot! quiz

ACTIVITY: The students are given an online Kahoot! quiz about Past Perfect Simple and
Past Perfect Continuous using their phones. They need to complete ten sentences
with the right tense. This activity helps the teacher to organize the feedback of
the lesson.
