Expt -7

Aim of the experiment:-

To find the focal length of a convex lens by plotting graphs between u and v

or between 1/u and 1/v

Apparatus required :-

1. Convex lens with stand and holder

2. Object pin (needle ) with stand

3. Image pin with stand

4. Meter scale

5. Geometry box

6. graph paper-2

Theory :-

The focal length of convex lens formula is given by

Where f= focal length

u= object distance

v= image distance

Diagram:-

Observation :-

The position of convex lens is = 50 cm

The rough focal length is = 13.5 to 14.5 cm

The rough center of curvature is = 27 to 29 cm

Tabulation :-
For focal length of convex lens.
Graph:-
(Draw the graph in white side)

Calculation :-

From u-v graph, equally inclined line meets the curve at the point where u=v.

Object distance = image distance.

When object is placed at center of curvature 2f = u = v.

f = u/2 or v/2

f = __ cm

From graph -2
Conclusion:-

From the above experiment, it is conclude that the focal length of convex lens from table is
found to be cm and from the u-v graph was found to be cm and from 1/u- 1/v
graph was found to be cm.
