I. VOCABULARY

1. Climate change
Climate change is a complex and multifaceted issue that has both positive and
negative impacts on our planet. While the negative impacts of climate change are
often discussed, it is important to also consider the potential advantages that may
arise from this global phenomenon.
One potential advantage of climate change is the opening up of new trade routes.
As global temperatures rise, polar ice caps are melting, which is creating new
shipping lanes in the Arctic. This could potentially reduce shipping times and costs
for many countries, as well as provide new economic opportunities for countries in
the Arctic region.
Another potential advantage of climate change is the increased agricultural
productivity in some regions. As temperatures rise, growing seasons may become
longer in some areas, allowing farmers to produce more crops. Additionally, higher
levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere can increase plant growth and
productivity.
Climate change may also lead to new opportunities for renewable energy. As the
world shifts away from fossil fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there will be
a greater demand for renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro
power. This could create new jobs and economic opportunities in the renewable
energy sector.
While there may be some advantages to climate change, these must be weighed
against the significant negative impacts that are also occurring.
One of the most notable disadvantages of climate change is the
rise in sea levels. As global temperatures increase, polar ice caps
are melting, causing sea levels to rise. This can lead to coastal
flooding and erosion, which can have devastating impacts on
coastal communities and ecosystems.
Another disadvantage of climate change is the increase in
extreme weather events. As the climate changes, we are seeing
more frequent and intense hurricanes, droughts, heatwaves, and other extreme
weather events. These events can cause widespread damage to infrastructure,
agriculture, and ecosystems, as well as loss of life.
In conclusion, while there may be some potential advantages to climate change, it
is crucial that we continue to work towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and
mitigating the negative impacts of this global phenomenon. By taking action now, we
can help to ensure a sustainable future for our planet.

2. Electric vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular as a more sustainable

and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.
They produce zero tailpipe emissions, which means they do not contribute to local air
pollution or greenhouse gas emissions. This can help improve air quality and reduce
the negative impacts of climate change. Additionally, EVs can provide significant cost
savings over time and help improve energy security by reducing dependence on
foreign oil.
Beyond those likely externalities, there are some straight-up downsides. The first is
simple resource consumption. Cars are big and heavy,
and hence require a lot of steel, aluminum, plastic,
rubber, and so forth to produce a chassis and frame.
Then you need big quantities of lithium, copper, and rare
earth elements (often sourced from poor countries under
brutal conditions to produce the battery and requisite
parts for an electric drive train.
In addition to these disadvantages, there are also concerns about the
environmental impact of the substances used in electric vehicle batteries. The
production of lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in electric vehicles,
requires the mining of raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. The mining
process for these materials can have negative environmental impacts, including
water, air, and soil pollution. In addition to the environmental impact of mining these
materials, there are also concerns about the disposal of electric vehicle batteries at
the end of their lifespan.
In conclusion, electric vehicles have both advantages and disadvantages. While
they offer significant environmental benefits and cost savings, there are also
concerns about their range, charging infrastructure, battery life, and environmental
impact. As technology continues to improve and charging infrastructure expands, it
is likely that many of these disadvantages will be addressed, making electric vehicles
an even more attractive option for drivers.

II. SPEAKING

WHAT IS YOUR
FAVORITE TYPE
OF WEATHER? Well, my favorite type of weather is sunny
and warm. I love it when the sun is shining
and the temperature is just right, not too hot
and not too cold. It’s the perfect weather for
going outside and enjoying nature, like going for a walk
or having a coffee with friends. Plus, sunny weather is

great for taking photos, so I always make sure to bring

my camera with me when the weather is nice.
