Hedgehog Amigurumi

Pattern by AmbrosCrochet
Every part of the hedgehog is worked in rounds; do not join at the end of each round.
Finished size: approximately 20 cm (7.8 inches)
Yarn: I used 100% acrylic yarn, the Schachenmayr Bravo to be specific, in three different
shades of brown
Crochet hook: 3 mm

You will also need: tapestry needle (or needle and thread)
three 12 mm safety eyes (or needle and black thread/black yarn
if you wish to embroider the eyes and make a circle for the nose)
needle and thread
scissors
pins
toy stuffing

Notes: patterns uses US terminology

Abbreviations and stitches used: magic ring

single crochet = sc
increase = inc
decrease = dec
f/o = fasten off
How to read the pattern: rnd x → we are working on round x
(x sc, inc/dec) * y→ the instructions between parentheses
have to be repeated y times; (x sc, inc/dec) means we will
work one single crochet in each x stitches, and then work
one increase or one decrease into the next stitch. For
example, (3 sc, inc) * 6 means: work one single crochet in
each of the next three stitches, one increase in the fourth
stitch; repeat six times
x sc, inc/dec → work one single crochet in each of the x
stitches, then work one increase/decrease in the next stitch

Shape the toes

(you can watch the tutorials on my IGTV to see
exactly how I do it)
Using the tail, reach the third round counting from
the last one we made, then move two stitches away
from the closest side of the paw. Find the
corresponding stitch on the other side and insert
your needle in this stitch, making sure the yarn
passes over the paw, and pull so that the yarn
visibly cuts the top of the paw - repeat a couple of
times.
Move two stitches further away, and repeat to
create the last two toes.

3
Assembling
First we are going to assemble the head: place the ears three rounds from the eyes, or five
rounds from the color change, one stitch above the imaginary line you can trace from the
center of the eyes. You should sew them to that they cover six stitches horizontally and three
rounds depth-wise. The ears are approximately ten stitches apart.
We are then going to assemble the body - the side where the starting chain is will be the front
of the body.
Sew the paws to the body, two rows from the starting chain; between the front paws and the
back paws you should be able to leave one-two stitches. Only a part of each paw will adhere
to the body, and that is the part you should sew.
Sew the head to the body, aligning the back of the body and the back of the head.

Spikes
Making the spikes

Cut a strand of yarn approximately 10 cm (4 inches) long. Fold it in half.

1. insert the crochet hook in the stitch you want to tie the
spike to and grab the loop you have created by folding
the strand of yarn.

4
2. pull the loop through the stitch - not all the way
through

3. yarn over - as if you were making a chain.

4. pull all the way through.

5. pull on the yarn until a knot is formed and the

spike is secured to the head.

5
Placing the spikes

In these pictures I have traced a red line on the last rounds you should place the spikes.
In the first two rounds on the edges - both of the body and of the head - alternate using one
strand of yarn at a time, twice, and then in the third stitch you are making the spike, use two
strands of yarn instead of one.

on the head the spikes should be placed starting two rows

in front of the ears - or three rows from the color change -
in the space between the ears only.

On both sides, the last round you should place the

spikes is the last available round before the paws.
Follow the line given by that round into the head as
well.

6
On the bottom of the body, the last round you
should place your spikes is between rounds 4 and
5.

I usually trim the spikes, leaving them a bit shorter than the ears in the two rounds in
front of the ears and just as long as the ears on the rest of the head and body.

Shaping the head

This is an optional step. If you do choose to make it you will need needle and a neutral
colored thread.

We want to push the eyes closer together. To do

this, insert the needle in the lower inner corner of
one of the two eyes and push it through the base
of the nose so that it reaches the lower inner
conner of the other eye; repeat this step three or
four times going from one eye to the other, pulling
on the thread after each time and you will see the
eyes coming closer together.

7
You can also lightly shape the bridge of the nose by repeating these same steps following the
placement of the pins in these pictures.
