ALOR REGENCY

1. GEOGRAPHY
Alor is the Regency in the
eastern part of East Nusa
Tenggara province, bordering
with Maluku province in the
northeast, Flores sea in the North,
Maluku sea in the east, Ombay
strait in the south and Lomblen
Island in the west. This regency

consists of several islands and the
biggest two are Alor island and
Pantar island; it includes several small islands, such as: Baranusa, Pulau
Kambing (Goat island), Buaya (Crocodile) and Tereweng. Alor regency
covers 2.139 km2. The topography of this regency is quite rocky and there are
two mountains stand in both big island, a 1432 meters height Muna mountain
in Alor island and the second one is a 997 meters high volcanic mountain
called Sirung in Pantar island.

2. CLIMATE
Alor has a tropical climate with two seasons; they are dry season which starts
from June until October and the rest of the year, and rainy season from
November to May. The rainfall in this regency is 1.430 mm/year.

3. GOVERNMENT
As regency, this regency is leaded by a regent. The capital city of Alor
regency is Kalabahi, a city which lies on Mutiara Bay. This regency divided
into 5 districts, comprising 56 villages all over the regency. All governmental
activities are centered in this city.

4. LIVELIHOOD
Alor people move from one
area to another area for farming.
They cut and burn bushes and
trees, cultivate the land and then
move when the land is no longer
productive. Another portion of
the population lives by the shore
as a traditional fisherman. They
‘Bagan’ for traping fishes are known as good divers. Some
of them use the traditional
equipment for fishing and some other build a ‘bagan’ to trap the fishes.

5. SOCIAL STRATIFICATION
Every tribe in Alor regency has their own social stratification. The
system of social stratification which is still exercised in Alor is most clearly
identified on special occasion like the performance of a traditional ceremony.
The highest level is the King and Captain. The captain is the one who carries
out the ruling of the government. Next is Lamuli who takes care of security,
Ukur (the adviser), Aneng (the prophet) who takes care of planning, Among
(the administrator), Mukung (the peace maker), Marang the priest of the tribe,

6. RELIGIOUS SYSTEM
Alor people still believe in the highest supernatural power known as
Labatala. Human beings are his creatures. The request of Alor people are
made with the help of Mou Maha Maha which is described as the flying god,
whose duty is to bring the request to Ui (moon) and Fed (sun) who then rely
the request to Labatala. Besides, the people also believe in a destructive magic
power whose god is Kalinang. A black magic practitioner is called Tineshing
and the one who can neutralize the black magic is called Lawolong.
At present, this regency is dominated by Christians (Protestant) then followed
by Moslems and few numbers of Catholics, Hindus and Buddhist.

7. CULTURE AND LANGUAGE
There are more than 40 local languages which still exist in this regency.
New generations in new settlement communicate by means of Malay language
when isolation is overcome. Consequently certain local language is dying out.
The dialect spoken in West Pantar resembles one of the language spoken in
Lamaholot language family in Kedang. This is caused by the small distance
between Pantar island and Lomblen island, where Lamaholot language is
spoken.

8. ART ACTIVITIES
The sense of art of the natives is expressed
in ikat weaving, carving and sculptor, songs
and dances. The ikat is colorful and made of
silk, and is similar to that of Adonara in
Kedang, East Flores. The colors are
separated horizontally by geometric motives,
such as rectangles and fin-sided figures. The
natives of Alor usually wear a sarong and a
scarf. There are also various kinds of
dancing that are accompanied by a ‘gong’,
drum and a ‘moko’. The most popular dance

is Lego Lego, which is usually performed by
teenagers in the occasion of proposal.
Another main features of art is Moko. This is
the main characteristic of marriage
ceremonial custom in Alor. Moko is similar
to a bronze drum in north Vietnam.

9. SPECIAL EVENTS
a. Pate Baloi Ceremony
Pate Baloi held at the
beginning of farmers’
planting season, in March,
marked by erection of
bamboo masts and areca nuts
splitting ceremony,
accompanied with a
traditional dance called Lego

b. Ala Baloi Ceremony


It is celebrated as a bad luck
protection ceremony, usually
held in June, at Bampaloka
village of Northwest of Alor
sub-regency. There are
beautiful tourist attraction
nearby like traditional village
of Takpala and Momban,

Alor and Alor Kecil island.

10. TOURISM OBJECT
a. Mali Beach
Mali beach is located in
Kabola village, Teluk
Mutiara sub-distric, about 10
km awai from Kalabahi. This
beach has calm water, white
sand, beautiful sea park, and
lushness of coconut trees with
loaded fruits. At this beach

and there is sacred old grave

b. Deere Beach
Dere beach is a white sandy beach with captivating undersea park. The
beautiful beach has natural nuance with breaker wave and cool weather.

c. Kepa, Bao, Raja Island and Makasar Beach


At these resorts coolness of weather can chaise big fishes destroyed. The
destroyed fishes are floating and taken by people. Marine activities can be
held here, like diving, swimming, fishing and other activities

d. Sea Park
Sea park in Alor regency can
be found in this location.
Such as Ampera, Alor kecil,
Keppa island, Pura island,
Alor Besar, and Wolwal. At

enjoy the beautiful

e. Mahligal Pillars
Mahligal pillars are located in
Tude Village, west pantar
sub-district. At these resorts,
there are twelve pillars made
of wood that are predicted
inherited from XV century as
the historical evidence of
Kallawang kingdom.

f. Sixty Branches Palm Tree


This is located in Mauta village, West Pantar sub-district. There is a palm
tree with 60 branches and 9 meters height. This place is often used for
meditation to have certain spiritualism.
g. Magang Kabi
It is located in Tude village,
West Pantar sub-district.
There is a rock palace of 30
meters high and it is
predicted 501 years old and
as the historical evidence of
Magang Roti kingdom.

h. The Old Mosque of Lerabai


Lerabai is the oldest mosque in Alor regency. It is unknown exactly when
it was build. This ancient mosque is locatd in Wakapsis village, Southwest
Alor sub-district. It is the first mosque which proves the arrival of Islam in
Alor regency.
i. The Old Quran
This Quran is the oldest one made from tree bark and is always respected
by the Moslems in Alor Besar village, Nortwest Alor sub-district.

j. The Gold Statue of Kalijahi

The statue was made of gold and is located in Batu village, East Pantar
sub-district. This statue is archeological remains that has not revealed it’s
design.
k. Lawahing Village
Lawahing village is in primitive Kabola ethnic group settlement. Their
houses are very traditional and their clothes are made of tree bark.
l. Mombang Village
Mombang village is in primitive Kabola ethnic group settlement. Their
houses are very traditional and their clothes are made of tree bark.
m. Malafang Village
This village is located in Lembur Batu village, East north Alor sub-district.
The primitive abui ethnic groups exist in this village with original custom
and tradtion. They still maintain their tradition.
n. Bampalola Settlement
This settlement is located in
Bampalola village, Northwest
Alor sub-district. It is the old
settlement of Pamplona
ethnic group. The form of
traditional houses is still
original and the people still
run the custom and tradition,

o. Aneinfur Village
This village is situated West Kalabahi sub-district. It is close to Kalabahi
Town and it has beautiful scenery, white sandy beach and calm rhythm of
waves embellish the traditional village.

11. ACCOMODATION
1. How to get there
Alor regency can be reached
by air and sea transportation.
Kalabahi as the capital city of
Alor, can be reached from
Kupang 137 miles by a 14-16
hours boat trip or an hour
flight by Twin Otter, one of
the Merpati Nusantara Air
Planes. The plane lands at
Mali airport which is 28 km
out of Kalabahi. Sea
transportation is offered by
Awu ship and feri (small-
sized ship). Another line of
sea transport to Kalabahi is
from Atapupu Seaport, Belu
regency, about 8 hours trip.
