CHAPTER 1.
INTRODUCTION

Introduction & Safety Importance

Everybody in the workplace or industries, from the old employee to the newest worker or
helper (ground line people) has unlike but important duties to keep the workplace safe.
Because employers have the most power in the workplace, they have the most responsibility.
But it’s most important for your own protection that you understand everybody’s health and
safety duties, mainly yours.
Preventing injuries and illnesses at work starts with you and with the things you learn in
Bengal Metal Works, but it doesn’t end here. One of safety officer and assistant duties
under the Health and Safety (H&SM) is to give you specific information and instructions
about how to stay safe while at work. What you understand it will help you start to learning
those instructions. Use what you gain here every day of your working life.

Safety Awareness
Safety awareness practice is a very vast one and it is very difficult for anyone to hold a
mastery over it. It provides the basic working knowledge of the safety equipment and rules. It
also explains the use of different methods, equipment and techniques of safety in industry,
which finally facilitate shaping of these safety equipment into various usable forms. In
general, various safety awareness know by long training how to use safety equipment and
proper use of Persona Protective Equipment’s (PPE). Trained and capable persons should be
admitted to this type of mechanical works and permitted to operate safety equipment.

The workplace and shop floor should formulate a plan to fulfill its safety and health policy
asset out in the Safety declaration. Successful management formation and ordering should
be put in place for dispatching the policy and rules. Health and safety objectives and targets
should be set for all officers, employees, line function workers and all top management
people.

1
Systematic approach
The workplace and shop floor should formulate a plan and systematic approach to fulfill its
safetyand health policy as set out in the Safety Statement and action. An effective management
structure and arrangements should be put in place for delivering the policy. Safety and health
objectives and targets should be set for all managers and employees.

Workplace Inspections
Workplace inspections must be done regularly. They are most important method to identify
hazards or high risk or maintenance problems. Inspections or Examination are typically done by
a safety officer or senior manager or supervisor and affront line worker and safety executives .

Workplace Investigations
Workshop examination help to get to the depth causes of incidents and minimize the risk for
alternate by putting corrective action in place. Under several circumstances, the Organization Of
Safety Act requires an enquiry to be done. Safety officer do some sort of investigation after
losses or injuries, incidents and ‘near-misses’ officer teams usually include employer and
worker representatives. Everybody on the team needs to learn basic training in order to do this
task properly.

Safety Training and Leadership

The community, management and surrounding can play a critical role in the prevention of
workplace injury and losses. Changing attitudes towards workplace safety and awareness starts
in all of these learning centre and sharing basic knowledge about safety rules. Getting employee
to explore what types of training could be need to meet the different requirements and hazards or
risk of different workplaces, is a great way to start thinking about injury or loss prevention.
Second way to create conversation is to discuss what employees are currently receiving in the
way of safety training , in comparison to what they should be getting according to safety rules
and best practice.
In the shop floor where there are rules and responsibilities for worker safety education and
training, it is the employers who must ensure a training program is appropriate and constantly
carried out.

2
Safety training needs are unique to each workplace and reflect the level of commitment and
leadership the employer and workers is showing toward safety and injury and risk prevention.
Safety training gives workers or front line employees, management people (which includes
supervisors and managers) the knowledge, rules and tools they require to make smart and safe ,
easy and better decisions on the job. We all needs basic safety training, along with training that
is properly to the hazards and risk of their own jobs, project and tasks. Training is necessary to
appreciate and utilize the following three key shop floor safety rights :
A. The right to know.
B. to participate.
C. and to refuse work felt to be unsafe.

RESPONDENTS

2.1 Safety Evaluation in Bengal Metal Works.

The Bengal metal work is one of the leading manufacturing unit in the city of Kolkata,
Maharashtra. They are manufacturer of machining job on Milling machine, Drilling
Jobs, Press Shop and Fabrication work. The organization has recently diversified into
Personal Protection Equipment(PPE) and stared its manufacturing unit of safety gears
mainly the industrial gloves and are also the exporter of it. The company is located in
the industrial area, Tangra which is the one of the biggest industrial centre in the
Kolkata. The company’s manufacturing unit has a 1500 sq. built up area to house the
facility. The firm is the supplier for the Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company Ltd
and supplies the all manufacturing products, fabrication , small and big components and
turnkey projects.
Many of the engineering projects executed by Bengal metal works have set new
benchmarks in terms of scale, accuracy, quality and delivery precision.
The product range covers:
1. Godrej Cupboards

constant quest for topmost quality have enabled the Bengal metal works to attain and
sustain leadership position for over almost three decades . Serving the core sectors and
manufacturing of the economy Bengal metal works has pioneered eye-catching
achievements in Kolkata local industries.
The Bengal Metal work was established in 1975 at Kolkata, with the staff of 50
employees which include 20 workers. We started our project with the organization
study, passed through the various department of the organization like sale and shipping,
accounts and administration, quality assurance and production department, then after
the organization study through observation then selected the topic as Safety Measure
for employee in Bengal metal works.
In India the first factory Act was passed in 1881.The Act was basically designed to
protect children and to provide few measure for health and safety of the worker. This
law was applicable to only those factories, which employed 100 or more workers. In
1891 another factories Act was passed which extended to the factories employing 50 or
more workers. The recommendation of Rage committee was passed by GOI in 1948
and present act i.e. The factory Act 1948 was enacted. Understanding the safety climate
or culture, the perception and attitude of the work force are the important factor in
assessing the safety need.

CHAPTER 3.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Why Safety Awareness is important at Bengal Metal Works.

These days, workplace (Workshop) health and safety procedures are important for the
wellness of both employees and employers because human loss is too large and
unsupportable. As, such loss can employ major loss to the families.

All the industries and workplace do have safety risks, but the management should
loyal their time to think and arrange the things that what safety protections are
required in their industry to make sure that their employees are safe enough for all the
time. the top management should final with all the employees related to their daily
work and task. So, that the safety team and management can take some action
according to the desired details of employees and workers. This helps them in
improving the productivity, output and quality of the products and lot more.

6
1. Aware about the surroundings :
There are many employees who doesn’t mind about their surrounding hazards.
But, it is most important to observe your co-employees working circumstances.
Once you get to know about the hazards that occur at your workplace, then it will
help you in reducing the risk and allow you to take the precautionary steps.

2. Minimize workplace stress :

Most of the employees are not fit and healthy because of their busy schedule,
which includes long working hours, work-pressure and conflicts occur with co-
workers or with the boss of the organization. Taking regular rest, sit in an
appropriate position with proper food. It will be better for you to plan your task
orderly and manage the things to minimize your workplace stress.

3. Use tools appropriately :

Take proper precautions while using machines, equipment or any other tool,
instead of taking any shortcuts to get final product. Taking shortcuts is one of the
biggest reason behind workplace loss or injuries. It’s a high safety risk to use
platform as a ladder or one tool instead of another for a different job. So, it is
always advocate to use the right tools and minimize the opportunity of workplace
injuries.
Example: - Below image is indicating proper use of tool with Personal Protective Equipment.

7
4. Keep crisis exits which are easily accessible:
In case there is crisis, you will need move fast towards exits.

5. Update Your Supervisor about the unsafe working conditions:

It is important that you keep updating your supervisor about the hazards or
risks occur at workplace or shop floor. They should be legally bond to
ensure that their employees are working a safe environment or not. If the
employees and shop floor worker are not working in safe environments, then
it is the duty of the supervisor to listen and grip their condition and create
safe working environments for employees.

6. Use mechanical assistance:

When you plan to carry or lift up some heavy equipment’s then you should
use a conveyor belt, forklift. There are lot of risks involved, if you try to
carry something which is heavier, it can attack your weighing capability and
can lead to some muscle displacement. So, make sure that use the proper
tools for not harming yourselves.

8
7. Stay Alert and safe:
There are many employees who usually compromise or ignore the alerts of
warning and due to this, a number of workplace injuries or fatalities occur.

8. Minimize Workplace Environment Stress:

Stress to any employee or to any co-worker, can lead into depression and
into concentration problems. And the main reason includes, extended
working hours, excess of work, insecurity of job and issues which occur at
co-workers or professionals. So, instead of taking stress on your shoulders,
you should discuss it with your supervisor and ask him/her to look after your
problems which you are facing in the organization.

9
9. Wear the right Personal Protective equipment’s:
It is essential that you wear the right protection equipment tools during your
work. And, the equipment’s can be in any form like, earplugs, earmuffs,
hard hats, gloves, full-face masks, safety gloves and any other equipment
which is required to wear while working. These tools will prevent the
workers from the incidents that occur at workplace.

10. Sit in a proper posture:

If you have a sitting job, then it is necessary keep your posture correct, while
working on a desk. You need to keep your shoulders in line and straight
back to avoid any spine problem.

10
Statement of problem

According to the past data and accident occurrence and figure of the organization it is
been analyzed the occurrence of the same accidents happened again and again, causing
suffering and distress to an ever-widening circle of workers and their families. However,
learning the lessons from what you uncover is at the heart of preventing accidents and
incidents.

Objectives
1. To reduce the rate of accident.
2. To increase productivity and moral of an employee
3.To identify the awareness of worker regarding safety
4. To study the overall effectiveness of the study

Need for the study

Safety awareness is important because it secure the comfort of employees, helper, office staff
and management. Looking after Health safety and awareness makes good business sense.
Workplaces and shop floor which neglect health and safety risk undertaking, may lose staff, get
injuries, and may increase costs and reduce profitability.

Data collection

The project will be based largely on the secondary data (with the source specified for the same) which can
be collected from various sources depending on the availability and accessibility of data. Primary data may
be used at times of the study if it demands so. The sources of both primary and secondary data will be
clearly specified in the report for the purpose of reference.

11
Sampling

A) Population
There are total 50 Employees in Bengal metal works from the population for study.
Of the 50 employees only 20 workers are in production unit.

B) Sample Size
All the 20 Employee are taken for the study.

C) Sample Process
As all the 20 employees are taken into consideration for the study, CENSUS method of sampling
is used. (Safety Equipment).

Methodology

The project study on awareness of safety measure at Bengal metal works , there are basic
safety techniques , rules, survey and training used to conduct the study. Table charts, line
graph, pie chart , graphs and basic data can be used to represent data effectively (table of
charts and graphs will be available with the effective report).
However, various statical tools could be used while selecting samples for the study and
training , ascertaining various figures relating to the subject under study and determining
correlations
The report will be largely based on systematic arrangement of facts and figures and drawing
sense out of the raw data available.

12
Plan of action

There should be a proper planned and proper approach to applying the safety and health
policy through an effective safety and health management system. The main aim is to reduce
risks. Risk Assessment methods should be used to find the priorities and set objectives for
removing hazards and reducing risks. Wherever possible, risks should be eliminated through
the selection and design of provision, equipment and processes. If hazards or risk cannot be
removed, they should be minimised by the use of physical controls and safe systems of work
and policy, as a last report, through the provision of PPE. Performance standards should be
received and used for measuring and achievement. Specific activity to encourage a positive
safety and health culture should be identified.

13
CHAPTER 4.
DATA INTREPERTATION AND ANALYSIS
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is used to create a protective barrier between a
employee and hazards in the workplace. PPE includes such equipment as safety gloves,
safety shoes, helmet, safety glasses.

The objective of this study is conducted to understand the safety awareness at Bengal
metal works. Along with this, the study also aims at determining the major challenges
and current scenario injuries, losses in industry.

In order to determine the listed objectives, we first need to understand following basic
safety tips.

Safety requirement list.

A safe working environment and culture is based on how well the people, in both
management and on the shop floor, stick to and communicate about safety standards.
The footing of any successful workplace safety effort is one that motivates employees to
identify high-risk behaviors and opportunities for improvement while also making well-
informed safety decisions during daily routine tasks.
❖ Following list of safety requirement list.

1) Be aware of your environment and surroundings.

2) Keep correct posture to protect your back.
3) Take regular breaks when you feel down.
4) Use tools and machines properly.
5) Keep emergency exits easily accessible.
6) Use mechanical aids whenever possible.
7) Reduce workplace stress.
8) Wear the correct safety equipment.
9) Report unsafe conditions to your supervisor.

14
Employers and employees share responsibility for health and safe shop floor to
make healthy and happy working environment to avoid hazards, losses and
injuries while working.

Following are some of the key safety Employers’ Responsibilities:

1. Ensure equipment, materials, machines, colleagues and the work environment

is safe.
2. Establish safe work and safety policies and procedures and ensure they are
followed.

3. Provide an orientation to the company’s safety policy and provide safety

training on
hazard or risk information, basic safety equipment use and operational procedures.
4. Consult with employees, management, safety officers on workplace health and
safety issues.
5. Establish a health and safety committee (where 15 or more employees,) or a
safety
representative (where 5-20 employees).
6. Make everyone accountable including top level management for their safety
performance.

The Limitations of the Proposed Study

Following will be the limitations of the project: -
1. Since the research is carried across a limited up to 20 employees, I did not
reached to maximum people for safety awareness.
2. Due to time constraint it was difficult to collect data from all the
employees and management.

3. Employees were reluctant to disclose the information.

In order to convince the objective of the study, all the employees must be studied. Once
the data is being collected, a collective inference can be drawn on the prospects and
challenges of the industry in question.

15

CHAPTER 5.

FINDINGS
Age wise distribution.

It is found out that the young age group belongs to the age group 25-35 participated
as 50 percent along with more than 30 percent of the age group belongs to 20 to 25
and over all more number of young adults are participated in the study.

Gender wise distribution of the respondents.

It is determined out that manufacturing industries is mostly dominated by the male.

Thus, 80 percent of the Male respondents participated in this study rather than female
counter part who participated 20 percent.

Educational Status of the respondents.

The results indicate that partially educated employees are participated in the study,
thus, nearly 40 percent of respondents completed 7th Std and secondary education.
And 30 percent of the respondents of the study are till 5th Std . Followed by this, 13.6
percent of the respondents are Post Graduates of various disciplines. The road users of
8.4 percent are diploma and ITI holders.

Marital Status.

Around 70 percent of employees are married, and 30 percent of employees are

unmarried respondents participated in the study.

Status of the Yearly Income.

In the study mostly, the middle-income group is dominated. They constituted in to 40

percent of the respondents and their yearly income is less than Rs.200000 and lesser
percentage of respondents of higher income group is participated in the survey.

Employment status.

Among the respondents 40 percent of the respondents are labour and jus less 5
percent less of the employees i.e., 35 percent of the respondents working as skill
labour. A less percentage of professionals like draft man and About 10 percent of the
respondents as helper.

42
It is also found that all the respondents of the study are having uniformity in the
importance of the factors such as safety rules and training is most important part of
employees safety. An employees are looking for communication with management
regarding safety goal awareness to create safe working environment. Moreover,
agreed with necessary training for new employees and for new position in the
company.

Lack of safety awareness clearly indicating with above question “who is responsible
for safety” where employees are strongly agree with safety responsibility is in boss
hands and which is not true and actual result is everyone is responsible for safety not a
single person. On different mode few employees respondents are agreeing with us
uses of safety gloves but quiet number of respondents is also said they have never uses
gloves for specific operation.

From these results safety awareness and safety taring is pretty much successful, there
is still scope of improvement in the industry for better life and productivity as well as
when they put safety first they will eliminate accidents, injuries and losses and helping
employees to perform their jobs fearless and allows worker or labour to enter their
shop floor with positive attitude

43
Conclusion

It only shows that most of the employees are not aware about safety management, its
either that the employees and workers are not aware about safety rules and regulation
and safety equipment. Printed materials like safety wallpaper, images, printed papers
and features on unsafe acts/incidents were sufficient. Safety training program the
workers are not properly aware and not feeling about safety management awareness
with regards to the training programme on the use of Personal Protective Equipment,
well-informed on the safety hazards of the product, orientation on newly hired
employee or upgrade with higher position or change the different role, and awareness
on what to do during crisis. it’s clearly place the management of safety and safety
officer and health as a prime responsibility of line management from the most senior
executive level to first-line supervisory level.

Safety and health can make to business show by maintaining and developing human
and physical resources, by reducing costs and by expressing corporate responsibility.

There should be enough safety rules and management so as to have a great impact on
the productivity, quality and quantity of the workforce, that the quality, maintenance
accurate work towards industries and the safety management has a great contribution
to the productivity of the employee.

Safety and environment are important thing in our workplace and surrounding area. This is
the first priority in every place. Something must need to be done to motivate employees,
workers and industries to put safety, health, safety and environment at the top most of their
agenda. It will help the management of the company to and measure the safety performance,
productivity and quality of work of the employees. Safety targets and reporting processes,
procedures for audit, investigations, remedial actions, and safety training education. I utilized
the descriptive method with the questionnaire as the major source of data from the 20 regular
workers who are at the manufacturing area which purposively selected. The grade of
awareness on safety training should be given an importance by the management reason it
gives a great impact on the productivity of the employees, and with that the quality and
accuracy of the safety management has a great contribution to the productivity of the
personnel.
