FLAT SLAB
Definition:
It is a reinforced concrete slab supported directly by
concrete columns without the use of beams
A flat slab is a two-way reinforced concrete slab that
usually does not have beams and girders, and the
loads are transferred directly to the supporting
concrete columns.

CLASSIFICATION OF FLAT SLAB

SYSTEM

1. Solid flat slab(or flat plate)

2. Solid flat slab with drop panels
3. Solid flat slab with column heads
4. Solid flat slab with column heads & column

Components of flat slabs:

• Drops: To resist the punching shear which is
predominant at the contact of slab and column
Support, the drop dimension should not be less
than one -third of panel length in that Direction.
• Column heads: Certain amount of negative
moment is transferred from the slab to the
column at he support. To resist this negative
moment the area at the support needs to be
increased .this is facilitated by providing column
capital/heads

Uses of drop panels

•increase shear strength of

slab
•increase negative moment
capacity of slab
•stiffen the slab and hence
reduce deflection

APPLICATION OF FLAT SLAB

• In the case of high rise building thinner slabs are required so that
additional floors can be added.
• The distance that be spanned by post-tensioned slabs exceeds that of
reinforced constructions with the same thickness.
• For increasing span lengths so as to increases the usable
unencumbered floor space in buildings.
• For diminishing the number of joints in the structure.
• For the speedy construction of the project.
• The amount of steel required is much less than in normal RCC
structure.
• The moulds can be used No. of times as per the demand.
• Due to reduce beam section the load transferred to foundation is less
compared to that of RCC structure.
• The structure is crack free as the whole structure is in compression.
• Large span of slab can obtain easily.

LIMITATION OF FLAT SLAB

• Careful handling of prefabricated components such as

concrete panels or steel and glass panels is required.
• Attention has to be paid to the strength and corrosion-
resistance of the joining of prefabricated sections to
avoid failure of the joint.
• Similarly, leaks can form at joints in prefabricated
components.
• Transportation costs may be higher for voluminous
prefabricated sections than for the materials of which
they are made, which can often be packed more
compactly.

BENEFITS or ADVNTAGES OF FLAT SLAB

• Flexibility in room layout

•Saving in building height

•Shorter construction time

•Ease of installation of M&E services

•Prefabricated welded mesh

• FLEXIBILITY IN ROOM LAYOUT

• •allows Architect to introduce partition walls
anywhere required
• •allows owner to change the size of room
layout
• •allows choice of omitting false ceiling and
finish soffit of slab with skim coating

• Flexibility in Room Layout

Flat slabs allows Architect to introduce
partition walls anywhere required, this allows
owner to change the size of room layout. Use
of flat slab allows choice of omitting false
ceiling and finish soffit of slab with skim
coating.

• SAVING IN BUILDING HEIGHT

• •Lower storey height will reduce building
weight due to lower partitions and cladding to
façade
• •approx. saves 10% in vertical members
• •reduce foundation load

• Shorter Construction Time

Use of flat slabs requires less time for
construction by the use of big table formwork.

(AN AUTONOMOUS INSTITUTION)

• Ease of Installation of Flat Slabs

• All M & E services can be mounted directly on the
underside of the slab instead of bending them to
avoid the beams.
• Use of Prefabricated Welded Mesh
• Use of prefabricated welded mesh minimizes the
installation time of flat slabs. These mesh are
available in standard size and provides better quality
control in construction of flat slab.

Difference between two-way and flat slab

• In two way slab, the slab is supported by beams, the

load of both slab and beams is conveyed to columns and
footings.
Flat slab, or more accurately flat plate the slab
is supported by columns, no beams to be used.
In two way slab, shear is critical in beams and
considered in slab.
• In flat slab, the shear is very critical at the area
of connection of slab with column (called punching
shear). here the column due to load is trying to punch
through the slab and we need the slab to be thickened (
by using Caps) and/ or heavily reinforced to resist this
shear.
Kavitha.O.R. 16CE 401/ DRCS/ Flat slab 24
SNS COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, COIMBATORE-35
(AN AUTONOMOUS INSTITUTION)

• In two way slab, due to (drop) beams,

some of the floor height is lost (we need
more height for different
piping installations.

In flat slab, we don't have this problem

because we don't have drop beams.
