LIFE IN THE PAST

Prepare for {IELTS}

DO YOU THINK PEOPLE HELPED
EACH OTHER MORE IN THE
PAST THAN THEY DO NOW?
STRATEGY: TALKING ABOUT THE PAST

Prepare for {IELTS}

Do you think people helped each other more in the
past than they do now?
QUESTION TYPE:
Compare now with the past
EXAMPLES:
• Do you think people are more materialistic than they used
to be?
• Are the things that make people happy today the same as
several decades ago?
• How has technology changed the way we work?
• How has the internet changed the way we live?
• Do you think travel has become safer over recent years?
• Is life less exciting than it was in the past?
Do you think people helped each other more in the
past than they do now?
Plan: 1. Answer the question / State your position
Personally, I doubt it.
I know there’s a common perception that life in our grandparents’ day was
wonderful, that neighbours were warm-hearted, that we cared for the
needy and looked after the sick and vulnerable, and so on and so forth.
But, if you ask me, it’s a bit of an old wives’ tale and anybody who
believes that nonsense is guilty of looking at the past through rose-tinted
spectacles. They should try living there!
In the past, there used to be homeless beggars on the streets and nobody
lifted a finger to find them shelter. If you got into debt, you would probably
be thrown into prison and you would more than likely starve to death
there. Children had to do back-breaking work in factories and nobody
made sure they were fed, clothed or educated. And anyone who got
seriously ill would be abandoned and left to fend for themselves.
We should all thank our lucky stars that we live in the 21st century.
Do you think people helped each other more in the
