with Hope’s 120th birthday on May 29th. It will not
be observed outside of this column, whose author uses
Pepsodent toothpaste because it sponsored Hope’s

reer at the apex of vaudeville, Broadway, movies, radio,
and television. I am not referring to stand-up comedy,
which Hope concocted by synthesizing Frank Fay’s
presentation and Will Rogers’ populism. I am not re-
ferring to his inspiring philanthropy or his record-
breaking collection of honors and tributes. I am
referring to contemporary American politics.
Hope was not a political comedian. Sure, he was the
first comic brave enough to make sport of Sen. Joseph
McCarthy (R-WI). And he deserved a seat on the UN
Security Council, for no one emerged from World War
II a bigger winner. But even during the Vietnam War,
Hope’s comedy was never partisan. He took care to
give a good-natured ribbing to all politicians. Hope’s
comedy was nothing if not broad. And his contribution
to today’s political environment was purely uninten-
tional.

ARMY DEFEATS NAVY

FOR THE FIRST TIME
IN 15 YEARS
DATE: DECEMBER 10, 2016

What made the moment: Entering 2016,

Navy had beaten Army in 14 straight meet-
ings of their rivalry. It was the longest win-
ning streak in the history of a rivalry that
has now spanned 130 years. After coming
up just short the year before, Army finally
bested the Midshipmen in 2016 and began
a three-game winning streak of their own.

U.S. National Park:

T he words “For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People” stretch across the
northern entrance of our nation’s first national park, Yellowstone.
According to the Department of Interior, the goal of the National Park Service
is, and has always been, to keep our wild places protected and unimpaired for
future generations. To that end, more than 400 areas and 84 million acres span-
ning all 50 states and several unincorporated territories of the United States,
protect America’s greatest natural treasures. With 61 of those wilderness areas
toting National Park designation, it can be tricky trying to pick which park to
visit.
So, to help you determine which parks should be higher on your bucket list,
we ranked each park based on their overall accessibility, facilities and accom-
modations, trails and attractions, crowds, and, of course, overall ‘wow’ factor,
which we measured by photo ops and stunning scenery.
Keep in mind, it’s almost impossible to say that one is better than the next —
there’s truly something special about each one of our national parks.

obtain support & services needed to
achieve self-sufficiency. Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, ALASKA
Nestled along the shores of Cook Inlet, across the Chigmit Mountains, lies a
lesser-known national park to add to your next Alaskan adventure. At over four
million acres, Lake Clark National Park is twice the size of Yellowstone Na-
(714) 596-1380 tional Park. But unlike Yellowstone, four million folks don’t visit Lake Clark
each year, so can expect to have this epic Alaskan landscape more or less to
www.coletteschildrenshome.com yourself. Why?
Well, for one, traveling to Lake Clark takes serious commitment. This vast,
isolated wilderness can only be reached by hopping aboard a float plane or boat
from the remote community of Port Alsworth. This tiny town offers the only
real facilities and services in the area, including a handful of hotels and tour
companies.
Still, when you stack Lake Clark against other remote Alaskan parks, it seems
to strike the perfect balance between access and peaceful, secluded wilderness.
There are no roads or cars in the park to contend with, and with only 22,000
people visiting each year, you won’t have to worry about busy trails or crowds.
There are also some accommodations, and even a few outfitters and adventure
companies that are willing to rent you equipment or take you fishing, back-
packing, kayaking, and bear viewing.

TIME HIGH: REPORT
H igh home prices and climbing mortgage rates continue to hamper af-
fordability, pushing prospective buyers’ monthly payments to their
highest level on record, according to a new report.
Home prices posted their largest increase since December in a four-
week period ending July 19, rising by 2.1 percent, the report from real
estate brokerage Redfin showed.
The second straight price jump in the last five months moved up the
sale price of a typical home to $382,500.
Rising prices, combined with stubborn mortgage rates that are nearing
7 percent, have pushed monthly payments for the typical home to a record
high at $2,656.
Sales prices increased the most in Milwaukee, where they rose by 12.2
percent from a year ago, in the four-week period ending June 16.
Redfin’s data shows prices falling in 20 metros tracked, including the

Hamidian Massacres, 1895

This picture of Armenian women from 1895 shows us how a photo can
illustrate a historical truth while being technically inauthentic. It's true that
Armenian women fought in battle during the Hamidian Massacres that
took place in the Ottoman Empire in the mid-1890s. The massacres were
a result of the Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid II's attempt to hold the crum-
bling empire together by embracing pan-Islamism. As non-Muslims, Ar-
menians were targeted and between 100,000 and 300,000 were killed.
Whether these two Armenian women were preparing to go fight the Ot-
tomans is a matter of debate. Experts in firearms have determined that the
rifles and pistol are props, and the photo is said to have the word "souve-
nir" printed on the back. In other words, this staged photo tells us about
the spirit of the times, and may have been an image meant to inspire Ar-
menian resistance, but that doesn't mean that these particular women were
actually fighters.

Ginger Beer

There are many different ways to make ginger beer, the
bolder and often spicier cousin to the more well-known
ginger ale. Some include naturally fermented and lightly al-
coholic variations that can take weeks to fully develop, or in-
dustrialized versions that are more akin to a strongly flavored
soft drink than a brewed beverage. This version from famed
bar professional Audrey Saunders splits the difference, pro-
viding a ginger beer recipe that can be made and served on
demand, while still providing a depth of profile and home-
made flavor.
At the now-closed New York cocktail oasis Pegu Club, pro-
prietor Audrey Saunders’ Gin-Gin Mule rightfully earned a
place in the modern-day cocktail canon. She described the
famously gingery cocktail as a cross between a Moscow
Mule (another ginger beer-based drink) and a Mojito (usually
a rum drink but here made with gin).
While this refreshing cocktail certainly can be made with
store-bought ginger fizz, it is even better when mixed with
something homemade. By creating a concentrated ginger
beer base and mixing it with soda water to create efferves-
cence, you have a combination that can come together from
scratch in about an hour, and will keep refrigerated for up to
two weeks.
“Store-bought stuff has a peppery, more than gingery, pro-
file,” says Saunders, interviewed in the book New York
Cocktails (Cider Mill Press, $20) by Amanda Schuster. In ad-
dition, many brands can be “insipid,” she says.

FAMOUS MURDERS
THAT REMAIN
UNSOLVED
By Thomm Quackenbush
Despite what television would have you believe, not every mur-
der is solved in under an hour. No matter how much effort police
put into the cases at the time and amateur sleuths do afterward,
some murders will never be solved.

the victim's identity, the method, the motive. On occasion, the best
the police can tell the public is that someone was definitely killed,
but anything after that is nebulous. With other cases, everyone
knows who did it, but they managed to get acquitted or gave the
police an alibi. In still others, the only reason that witnesses aren't
pointing fingers at the culprit is that these fingers will be immedi-
ately cut off — along with their heads. Huntington Beach

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Bohemian Rhapsody is a 2018 film, with the same title as one of the most popular songs
of the band/lead singer that it’s based around. Rami Malek plays Freddie Mercury, the front-
man of the legendary band Queen who’s dealing with both inner and outer turmoil in his
shortlived career, as well as his struggles with the AIDS virus.
Malek earned an Oscar for his role in the picture, which grossed over $900 million at the

MAKIN WAVES SALON box office, making it the highest-grossing film of all time, at the time of its release. The film
received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, as it only holds a 60% fresh rating
on Rotten Tomatoes.

found his fortune. Today, Zuckerberg has a net worth of over $88 billion, but the film dives
into the fact that some of his old classmates at Harvard sued him, claiming that the idea that
led to what is now known as Facebook was stolen from them. The film reveals the darker
side to Zuckerberg and his unmatched ambition.
The Social Network managed to bag eight Academy Award nominations and won for
three, including Best Adapted Screenplay. It was also voted 27 out of 100 on a list of the
best films of the century, created by 117 different critics.

The Theory of Everything (2014)

This biographical romantic drama stars Eddie Redmayne as legendary physicist extraor-
dinaire, Stephen Hawking. The English genius was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and
author who was director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the Univer-
sity of Cambridge at the time of his death. The film was adapted from a 2007 novel, based
on the scientist’s relationship with his wife, Jane, titled: Travelling to Infinity: My Life with
Stephen .
The Theory of Everything follows Hawking’s rise in science, along with his diagnosis
and decline of health. It received a number of positive reviews, as well as five Oscar nomi-
nations. At the British Academy Film Awards, it was up for ten accolades. In the film, Red-
mayne shares the screen with Felicity Jones, Charlie Cox, Emma Watson, and Harry Lloyd,
32 among others.

Sotheby’s is known for selling rare, beautiful collectibles, and the auction house is the go-to

Robby the Robot Movie Prop

Maker: MGM Studios
Original Price: $1.21 million*
Worth Today: $5.375 Million*
Robby the Robot was an iconic piece
of movie history. It was created for the
1956 Forbidden Planet, and it was made
for $125,000 ($1.2 million in today’s
money), though, on re-sale, it would far
eclipse that original price. Robby the
Robot was auctioned off for over $5
million, making a fitting end to his suc-
cessful Hollywood career.
Bonhams, the auction house that sold
it, confirmed that number was a record
for a movie prop. In Forbidden Planet,
a group of astronauts travels to a distant Lily Allen and
planet to find out the fate of another Alfie Allen

Dracula is a tale for the ages. It is the classic vam-

Lugosi in the title role, is one of the most famous
films of all time. The movie was released on Valen-
