Beauty is not just within the human eye but also within the feelings of a person.

Permanent makeup demonstrates as an alternative to help with an individual’s confidence boost

to their beauty, especially for those who struggle with medical conditions and feel different than

other people in society.

As I started to involve myself into cosmetics, dermatology, esthetic, and skincare

concepts in my every day routine like watching YouTube videos or reels from skincare

influencers, I wanted to put myself out there and explore if a fascination I have in that area can

turn into a career. Since the start of my childhood, I have always been aware of my external

appearance and careful with my skin since I had a severe case of eczema and suffered from acne,

which made myself be disgusted in my own skin. Between those two types of conditions I had, it

made me conscious of myself and lowered my confidence level. This led me to the esthetics field

because it made me realize that if I encounter the feeling of my beauty being stripped away for

things I can’t control, there are also other people who go through the same sensitivity. I wanted

to explore a career where I can interact with people, help with the lack of confidence they would

endure because of external factors and conditions they encounter, and have the ability to treat it.

That matched the description of the esthetic industry, which led me to find a permanent make-up

artist at an esthetician clinic, which focuses on the beauty and appearance of a person. This

internship made me grasp and reflect on the cosmetic industry, and just like my mentor, I want to

communicate with the patient and alleviate any beauty problems the patient may face. In my

opinion, I would not want to pursue the permanent make-up route but the cosmetic dermatology

pathway because I want to focus more on the beauty problems beneath the patient’s skin.

However, this internship did help me realize what major and career path I want to pursue

because, regardless of not wanting to become a permanent make-up artist, it still involves the

cosmetic industry and demonstrates the same characteristics that I want to obtain, which would

be helping people’s beauty appearance. It helped me narrow down my major options and helped

flourish my attraction to this field that I have had ever since I was a little girl.

As a result, this guided me to think outside the box with the concept of how I want to

boost people’s confidence levels. It made me start thinking about the medical and aesthetic

worlds combined and how I could collaborate those two concepts. That led me to think about

people who suffer from medical conditions that affect their external appearance, such as

alopecia. The idea sparked in me whenever I shadowed my mentor during a microblading

session on a patient with very little hair on her eyebrows. Later, I found out she had alopecia, and

she explained how, by doing her eyebrows, she felt that her face shows more expression and has

started to have the confidence to show her features to her family and friends. This brought my

attention to people who suffer from those certain conditions, so that started my interest in

wanting to research how permanent make-up can benefit people with medical conditions, and

within that process, I found how it can benefit people with cancer as well due to the lack of

pigmentation they suffer on their faces. Even though shadowing a permanent make-up artist was

not my first choice, I still wanted to make the best use of my time there and have myself learn

the type of environment I have integrated myself into. Having that mindset intertwined with the

topic helped me brainstorm for my ISM project. For my project, I wanted to outline my research

on alopecia and cancer patients and how their conditions are not outstretched by the beauty

world, but that permanent make-up will create a solution to their problems. My purpose for this

project demonstrates me wanting to spread awareness to people who suffer from the same type

of medical conditions and have them realize that permanent make-up can open up doors of new

beginnings in their journey. Throughout the pain these individuals suffered with, I wanted to

show them the bright side of the road, demonstrating the benefits and that they don’t have to

suffer with weak confidence level every time they look at themselves in a mirror.

Therefore, after talking with my mentor, planning, researching, and brainstorming on

how I want to present this topic to my fellow peers, I decided to create a promotion video to

draw the attention of these individuals by making it aesthetically pleasing and showing my

dedication to this topic as I will talk enthusiastically about the topic. I will also add important

information about permanent makeup and relating it to alopecia and cancer, tying it together and

making it a video to entertain and have people not look away. Throughout the process of creating

my final product, I will first do all of my research on alopecia and cancer, how they affect

people’s appearance, and how permanent make-up can help, resulting in their confidence levels

increasing while at it. Next, I will have all my research organized in an outline so that each clip

that I am recording will say the correct information, and I can edit the video smoothly and add

captions and designs that pull the video together. Another important thing that I hopefully can

contain in my video is a mini-interview of a lady who actually suffers from alopecia and speaks

about her experience before, during, and after having permanent makeup done and how she felt

throughout the whole process. Finally, I will make a flyer that will captivate the naked eye with a

QR code so that people can access the video easily and not have to struggle to find the link.

Overall, this project involves an abundance of research so that I can turn this video into a success

and carry it out with hard work and dedication.

Altogether, this final project helps push me to research more about the esthetics industry

and the different areas where beauty can impact and occur in an individual. After doing this

project, I want others to gain the realization that everyone’s beauty will be unique and different,

and a problem would not occur if a person wanted to touch up their looks due to their appearance

and confidence level. Confidence sets the foundation of a person, and every person, especially

people who suffer from medical conditions, has the ability and the right to turn the next page and

start fresh, and that can mean a fresh new look that boosts their self-esteem and leaves behind

doubts about themselves.
