SOLAR GAS TURBINE

PNEUMATIC START SYSTEM

1
SOLAR GAS • OBJECTIVE
TURBINE After completing this course, participants able to:
PNEUMATIC
START • State the function of the start system
SYSTEM • Describe the function of the major pneumatic start
system components
• Given an illustration, identify the location of each
component of the pneumatic start system
• Describe the operational sequence of the pneumatic
start system

SYSTEM • START MOTOR
• CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

5
SOLAR GAS • PNEUMATIC SYSTEM COMPONENTS
TURBINE • AIR/GAS STRAINER (OPTION)
PNEUMATIC • Strainer ensures the cleanliness of the pneumatic
supply to the start system
START • Mesh type
SYSTEM • Installed in the gas inlet line external to the skid

6
SOLAR GAS • PNEUMATIC SYSTEM COMPONENTS
TURBINE • STARTER MOTOR SHUTOFF VALVE
• Control gas or air in supply line to the starter motor
PNEUMATIC • a pilot gas actuated spring closed ball valve
START • Springs hold the valve closed when solenoid is de energized
SYSTEM • remains open as long as pilot pressure is available and
solenoid energized

7
SOLAR GAS • PNEUMATIC SYSTEM COMPONENTS
TURBINE • SOLENOID‐OPERATED PILOT VALVE
• Controlled from the control system
PNEUMATIC
• De energized, pilot valve vents pilot pressure from the
START starter motor shutoff valve actuator, kept in closed
SYSTEM position by spring action
• Energized, pilot pressure is applied to the shutoff
actuator to open the valve

8
SOLAR GAS • PNEUMATIC SYSTEM COMPONENTS
• PNEUMATIC START MOTOR
TURBINE • Provide the rotational power needed to rotate the turbine
PNEUMATIC during start cycle
START • AD assembly provides a drive connection between starter
motor and engine compressor rotor shaft
SYSTEM • Starting power is transmitted to the engine through an
overrunning clutch

SYSTEM

11
SOLAR GAS • PNEUMATIC START SEQUENCE
TURBINE • Solenoid‐operated pilot valve energize
PNEUMATIC • Starter motor shutoff valve open
START • Lubricator is activated
SYSTEM • Starter motor begins rotation with clutch engagement
• The pinion gear of the starter rotates the intermediate gear and
provides starter rotation through the shaft and sprag clutch
• The shaft rotates the inner race of the sprag clutch, and then
locks the outer race; starter torque is passed through the outer
race to turn the engine
• After the combustion occurs, the engine speed will increase, the
engine has started to rotate the gear train. If the speed of the
gear train exceeds the speed of the starter motor, an over run
will occur which causes the sprag clutch to be released and the
clutch to rotate freely 12
SOLAR GAS • PNEUMATIC START SEQUENCE
TURBINE • Solenoid‐operated pilot valve de‐energize
PNEUMATIC • If the engine speed has reached 60%, supply pressure to the
START starter motor shutoff and the motor will stop rotating

SYSTEM • Starter motor shutoff valve close

• Starter motor end rotation
• Sprag clutch disengage
