Natural Gas Volume Flow

The capacity of a low pressure natural gas pipe line with a small pressure drop can be
calculated with the Spitzglass formula.

q = 3550 k (h/l SG)1/2

where
q = natural gas volume flow (cfh)
h = pressure drop (in Water Column)
l = length of pipe
k = [d5 / (1+3.6/d+0.03d)]1/2
d = inside diameter (in)
SG = specific gravity

Design Parameters
Heating Value : 1000 Btu/hour
Pipe Materials : Schedule 40 metallic pipe
Total maximum gas demand : 105000 Btu/hour
or 105 cfh

Specific Gravity : 0.6

maximum allowable operating pressure of pipeline : 75 mbar
Minimum operating pressure of the pipeline : 65.25 mbar
Pressure drop : 0.5 in WC

Natural Gas Pipe Size

Assuming 1 in = 1.049 in ( actual inside pipe diameter)
Approximate length of pipe = 230 ft

Then;
k = [d5 / (1+3.6/d+0.03d)]1/2
= 0.533

Therefore:
q = 3550 k (h/l SG)1/2
= 113.99 cfh

Conclusion:
Since the calculated volume gas flow is bigger than the total maximum gas
demand, then the assumed 1 inch gas pipeline diameter shall be used.
